Coca Cola Zero Fest 2009 – rocked or not?
By JBagley on Apr 13, 2009 in 2009, Featured
The 2009 Coca Cola Zero Fest has come and gone. What with last minute bands pulling out and venue changes, this sure was to be one of the more memorable Coca Cola music festivals!
So, if you attended the Coca Cola Zero Fest 2009, let us know in the comments below which event you attended, what bands you liked or disliked, what you thought of the venue and anything else you want to add.
Comment away!
Update: I’ve added a poll below, so you can now vote too.
Well this is a rather pointless post to have. You’re asking those who attended – ie those who weren’t disgusted enough to not buy tickets. Rather ask the question – how many of us didn’t bother to go this year. And that would include me (for the first time since Coke Fest started).

First year I also did not attend since it started. So, interested to know what people think who actually went.

OK, so I have attended every coke fest thus far and its something I look forward to every year. After the cancellation of 2 bands I was hugely disappointed but still wanted to catch Oasis Live as I know they will probably never come back to our country, so into the car and off to JHB (from Dbn).
Well let me tell you that it was a Huge disappointment. Panic was a bit rubbish. Their performance was not bad but they are just not Coke fest material. Oasis started badly with Liam not doing too well on the first 2 tracks but then recovering a bit with his vocals improving. Noel was Awesome and his performance was much better. Overall though Oasis disappointed. Reelation of the night – Snow Patrol. They certainly Rocked. Had the crowd going and just gave an all round excellent performance.
And thats what happens when 2 international bands pull out. You get disappointed. Usually there are at least 2 or 3 excellent performances at coke fest. This year, just 1. Cant say I am surprised. The line up was not great to begin with and when 2 of the more Rocking bands pull out…. well we’ve seen the result.
To Coca-Cola – Please get it right next year and please try to go with 6 international bands like previous years, so that there is plenty of entertainment on hand.
A dsappointed Rock Fan

I have been to all 3 prior coke fests, and even though the first one you could not get drink or food at least the bands were good, this year I was highly disappointed. The one and only reason I went was fro Snow Patrol, and thank goodness they lived up to my expecttations. The location sucked ass, it took me 3 hours to get there, the stage was so far away for the general ticket holders, and the dust factor was overwhelming. At least the food and drink situation was pleasing. Please next year can we have it at the race course again, and at least more than one band that is worth watching…

Coke Zero Fest was awesome, and much better venue this year! The bands were fantastic, and really got the crowd fired up! Biggest disappointment was Oasis, they played crap songs, insulted the crowd, and were down right boring!!!

It was fun. I drove down to Cape Town with my son to see the show. I was very disappointed about Bullet for My Valentine, but, because I know a music festival experience is something greater than the individual bands, I decided not to cash in my tickets. My son and I had a blast. CokeZero went out of their way to make it a really enjoyable day what with water guys and the goodies gals walking around the whole day. It was cool. I must admit though, Joburgers rock out a whole lot better than Capetonians! Any chance next year they can swop the dates for the two venues? Snow Patrol was a truly pleasant surprise. I left half way through Oasis because they couldn’t sing and they had a very boring stage presence. I caught the tail end of Dirty Skirts and am really sorry I dawdled on the beach and missed Zebra & Giraffe!

I also agree that snow patrol put on the best show i have seen in this country the audience participation and setting was fanastic. The drinks were plenty as well as the food, as for Oasis the organisers should of just put on a CD they bere boring and terrible to the croud, overall the SA bands were by far the best after snow patrol…………… WELL DONE SA BANDS YOU HAVE ENOUUGH TALENT TO FEATURE OVER SEAS.

Coke Zero Fest was brilliant!!
I refunded my golden circle tickets and got normal ones when RJA and Bullet cancelled.
I think that there might have been more people to this year’s fest than any of the previous ones – there were not only ten as some may have thought.
The people on this blog are a small minority and the ones that didn’t go were definitely not missed and as for your predictions of this being the last Coke Fest – it won’t be as it was a huge success!!

Well i had fun and the chicks was hot!!!lol can’t wait for next year:-)

I must say that the Cape Town venue was incredible, the SA bands the most impressive I have ever seen them and PATD and Snow Patrol (even though I am not a big fan) played their hearts out and really entertained the crowds. My only very small gripe is that even though Oasis played every song perfectly, it just seemed that they were so bored to be there, as though they just wanted the concert to end so they could go home to get some sleep. Maybe they are getting to old? Took us 3 hours to get out of parking but it was worth it. Looking forward to next year, hopefully with more international bands (Foo Fighters, Incubus, Pearl Jam, RHCP, come on, book them now!) Otherwise, great job, very burnt and going to suffer through work today!

I thought it was pretty good. Snow Patrol were very good, and all the other bands, with the exception of Oasis, were more than satisfactory.
If it’s at the same venue next year I won’t go though, simply because the parking situation afterwards was a disaster. It took us 2 and a half hours to get out of the parking area, and we left before the end of Oasis’s set, because they sucked so badly.

What a shit coke fest!!! We went just because we haven missed a single one!!!! the last time a band cancelled, we at least got vouchers etc this year just totaly blew and i dont even want to go to any other coke fests because of this one!! the organisers were terrible and i think i could have put a better coke fest together!! even though i didnt go to see snow patrol, they ended up being pretty good. but everything else was just horrid. at least it wasn overcrowded for a change…most people were clever enough not to go!!!

Wow, what a venue for the Cape Town Coke Fest!!! Such an amazing setting! The whole coke fest setup was awesom and the Zero Zone, Jack Daniels etc.. was great!! The SA bands and Snow Patrol were awsome!! At least the setting and other fun things to do at the Coke Fest made up for Oasis and Panic… Apart from the 1st Co-lab when are we going to have a final act that actually is good?

The South African bands all rocked – especially Evolver. Snow Patrol was by far the highlight of the whole event – they engaged the audience and created a fantastic vibe in the crowds. Oasis – what a disappointment! Liam and Noel don’t deserve the adoration I have given them over the years! Getting out of the parking was a nightmare, there should have been traffic control getting onto the R511.
Other that those two issues, we had a great time!

Must have gone to a different gig. Thought Snow Patrol were NICE and tight but predictable. Oasis were brilliant.
Organisation outstanding and sensible, who cares how long it took to leave?
Well done

I went to the Cape Town gig.
The Lourensford Wine Estate was an amazing venue!! By far the vest venue so far.
Snow Patrol were awesome!
Oasis were neither good nor bad, but I do think Noel sang better than Liam, I could hardly hear Liam. That said, Oasis still had me star struck!
I’m not a big Panic! fan but they were pretty good.
As usual The Dirty Skirts were awesome and the best SA band there!
I’ve been to every Coke Fest, last years was by far the best and this years was unfortunately the worst due to the two bands dropping out and the mission it was to get out once the concert was over, we sat in our car for two hours waiting to leave.
Next years Coke Fest better be magic Big Concerts or you might get a riot on your hands!

Absolutely brilliant! I would’ve paid R600 just to see Snow Patrol. But all the bands that I enjoy (Z&G, Skirts, Snow Patrol and Oasis) rocked out so hard I was loving every minute.
I also liked that Golden Circle had their own area as well, with a beer tent, foods stalls and toilets. No lines for food, booze or the loo. It was great, me and my friends had a jol of note!

After reading the comments i’m glad i didn’t go. What did Oasis say to the crowd?
Ceaser | Apr 14, 2009 | Reply
I have to say that this year’s Coke Fest in Cape Town was disappointing. With bands pulling out, one would have expected some sort of compensation – even if it was a drinks voucher. I was under the impression that the remaining bands were going to play longer sets – but that didn’t seem to happen. The evening ended just after 21:00 – but then it took two hours to get out of the parking area – very poorly organised!
Kayla | Apr 14, 2009 | Reply
I wonder what people where expecting?
Lets face Coke cant control what happens with bands and reasons for cancelling. I thought the show was well organised, yes there were changes but for the BETTER. You could go to the loo with minimal lines, get drinks and food with ease.
They made everything EASIER and more acceable after all this is what can make or break a show!
I think the local bands WORKED SUPER HARD to get the crowd going and keep us entertained. So PATD forgot one song – BIG DEAL they were not bad. Snow Patrol were out of this world and really LOVED them. Oasis is a half empty half full glass, we will never see them again but they were pretty good and better then i have seen in the UK.
THANKS COKE Looking forward to next year whoop whoop!

@Ceaser
I thought they were funny as hell
At one stage Noel said “So how are you guys looking forward to the world cup?” and the crowd roared and then he said “How SHIT do you think you’re going to do?” referring to how crap our soccer team is. I found it hilarious.
I mean they are Oasis, if you DON’T know they are huge assholes then you clearly don’t know Oasis. They also did the usual “I dont want you to, but I know you’ll sing along anyway” to wonderwall.

I think of like this; how many and which quality international bands did we have in SA prior to coke fest…
Seether charged R400 for their gig
R600 to see panic, snow patrol and oasis seems in-line with pricing.
and if you enjoyed listening to snow patrol prior to the gig, you’ll damn sure love listening to them now. I would have put snow patrol to play last. legendary.

I was so beyond excited to go when I heard that Bullet For My Valentine were going to come, I nearly had a heart attack!!
During the morning when they were announcing the bands, I was quite disappointed because all the other bands I did not really like but when I heard Bullet for coming, I phoned everyone I knew that loved them!!
Well, when it was time at the very last minute that they had to pull out, my whole life came crashing down beside me!!
Bullet (was) one of my favourite bands ever, but now I have come to see that the fans really mean nothing in a stars life do they?
It is ironic because the fans are what make the success of the band! If no one wants to listen to them, if a band has no fans, then they mean nothing in the music industry, so what makes Bullet think they are soo freaking special hey?
I cannot tell you how many people Bullet have disappointed by pulling out at the last minute, but all I can say is alot!! It is not the first time they have pulled out of something this big an most definitely would not be the last!
To tell you the truth, once I heard that Bullet wasn’t coming I broke down, I told everyone I did not want to drive all the way up to Johannesburg for no reason, to what other crappy bands, yet, I was convinced to go! By the time Friday morning came, our entire group got over the fact of Coke fest and spent the day riding the crazy rides at gold reef city instead!
So I say that this years Coke Fest really did suck, everything was just too chaotic and not planned with the greatest effort!
I have been going to coke fest since Metallica came out here to headline and they have all been awesome but this year was not the greatest at all, simply because I was totally put off, mostly for the international acts that pulled out but also for the last minute planning and other umm… “Pansy” bands they had out here, why would A metal chick like me want to go crazy to the emo bands that were here, yay!! eeegh!!
I really hope next year would be better!!!
I am just really upset that I didn’t get the opportunity to see Bullet in the very front of golden circle with my boyfriend and my best friends like we had all planned to be in, oh well, we live on right?

Hey… Alright,
All round, I got out of there a few minutes into Oasis so I could listen while we drove out, and didn’t get caught in much traffic, but wow… I will be back for next year’s Coke Fest, Keep ‘em coming =]Bringing Snow Patrol again would be the greatest choice you could make. Thanks
I went to the Coke Zero Fest at the Wine estate in Cape Town. Let me tell you… I had a f**king blast, sure, disappointment for the two bands that weren’t able to perform anymore, however, I went for the experience. During the day, it was quiet, and people were doing their own thing a bit, however, in the evening… Things certainly picked up and OH MY F**K, Dudes… Snow Patrol. My God… They rocked that frikken estate!! Never have I experienced something quite as amazingly breathtaking as Snow. P live. Panic at the disco has such a manufactured sound that when they performed live… He sounded shit. Sorry, but it’s true >_< A-King was alright, Zebra and Giraffe gave a awesome performance, they should’ve been later into the evening though, perhaps just before Snow Patrol

Just saw this – “Bullet (was) one of my favourite bands ever, but now I have come to see that the fans really mean nothing in a stars life do they?” Seriously? Get the f**k over yourself, they didn’t pull out to spite you. They had other commitments that were evidently of a higher priority than Coke Fest. My God some people feel sorry for themselves.
“so what makes Bullet think they are soo freaking special hey?” – Show me where they claimed to be special?
“oh well, we live on right?” For your sake, I hope so.

As a huge Oasis fan I booked my Golden Circle tickets early and was not disappointed as others were – they are not about stage presence they are about music and lets face it they make great music. Coming from the UK I wasnt a huge SA Music fan but the line up of SA Bands was Fantastic. I did feel that the international line up of bands was much better in previous years, although Snow Patrol were awesome.
I was disappointed that the times had changed – watching the bands at night is much better with the lighting etc but the venue and facilities were great. The traffic was a bloody nightmare- we slept in the car from 21h00-00h00 (I suppose thats why they changed the times otherwise we would have only got out of the parking at 3am!) when we got to the 1stop people that had left the venue at 9pm had only got there minutes before us!
The concert is a huge hit – we are so deprived of International music here in Cape Town that we will watch whoever comes out, I know I will buy my ticket for next year

I think Cokefest rocked!!
Would rather have had Aking than One Day Remains, and was kind of hoping for some freebies or vouchers due to the cancelation of the 2 bands (like the year guns and roses pulled out) and the jhb venue sucked a bit because of all the dust, but other than that it was really awesome.
Snow Patrol were briliant, they seemed so amazed at how awesome the SA crowd was and looked as though they were really enjoying themselves which was very cool. Oasis are legends, and even if they did suck a little bit you still get to tell people that you saw them live.
I for one am glad that Bullet cancelled, the crowd that was there was much chiller than it would have been had there been thousands of Bullet fans too.

Coke fest rocked. The Joburg venue was fantastic. There was plenty of beer, almost no queue to get it (loads of people manning the bar area). Local bands were great. Snow Patrol stole the show. Oasis was disappointing, but all in all it was a great day. Come on, people, with all those cars leaving one place at the same time, did you not expect to sit in a bit of traffic! Will be there next year for sure!

I’m very surprised to hear that so many of you are SO dissapointed with the Festival. You are definately very hard to please. I had an absolutely bloddy brilliant time. All the SA bands were excellent, Panic was great, Snow Patrol blew me away and Oasis was just being Oasis. And i agree with Sam on the band being about the Music…come on people, did you really think that Neol or Liam would be jumping around the stage like the Spice girls?? Matt, you hit the nail on the head! It was also great hearing them cover one of my favourite Beatles numbers, which topped the entire day off brilliantly!
We also had a trouble with the traffic, but as rockchic said, what can you expect with all those cars trying to get out of one place all at the same time! Turn your car radio up and have a jol with the people stuck with you!
Thanks Coke, it was an awesome day and will be remebered for a lifetime! Looking forward to 2010!

What an awesome Jhb event. I’ve now seen one of the world’s biggest bands live – Oasis. Crap, boring, arrogant, awesome, funny, not funny, awesome. Awesome. All of the above. And then there was Snow Patrol – who everybody agrees were brilliant. Clearly they were. In my opinion.
I knocked last years line up before the show and then had the most amazing concert. And I’ve been to a few. This year I was quietly disappointed – even before those two other bands pulled out (sorry I don’t remember their names already!). Evolver – Thank you. Brilliant. In my opinion. Cassette – The video clip you made for RJA, along with Evolver playing, made them pulling out even more special! Thank you.
I was a little disappointed in missing One Day Remains (never seen them before), while being stuck in traffic trying to get to the venue. But that was my own fault for leaving for the venue too late. It seems a lot of the people complaining about the show finishing early only arrived after the show had started anyway, so it didn’t bother you before the show that you weren’t going to be seeing 12 hours of music. Yes, we also waited in a long queue waiting to get out, but we had also just been to a music festival with thousands of other people. Not a private show.
Having said that – with so many whiney people around, taking so long to get to and from the venue is something the organisers will have to seriously think about. I’m surprised that nobody mentioned the slope to the ground. Maybe the refreshments helped everybody into thinking they were standing straight up all night.
And surely the golden circle needs to be made smaller. I am happy to pay extra to be closer to the action, but it is getting a bit ridiculous now. I’m sure the bands don’t enjoy seeing such open spaces. Many bands even commented on how far away the “rest” of the crowd was. Surely, also not nice for those who just want a general admission ticket.
All the bands were awesome. In my opinion. South Africa really does have some great tallent. In my opinion. Panic! really surprised me (even when they couldn’t remember their own words!), bacause they were one band that I just couldn’t get into listening to their cd’s. But they were pretty enjoyable. In my opinion.
I saw 8 bands on Friday night (6 I’ve never seen before – 3 of them international superstars – In my opinion), waited in my car for a couple of hours, but had a great evening out for R600. (Plus flights from Durban, etc etc…)Thank you. Well done organisers, I can’t imagine the scrambling you had to do after those two other bands dropped you.
It’s a pity you can’t please everyone, but some fans appreciate it. Never mind next year, I’d like to buy golden circle tickets for the next ten years please!

I had an absolute party this year:) First year I have actually listened to every single band play-WOW!!!! The SA bands really did us proud! Loved Evolver and the Dirty Skirts! Cassette have such stage presence it’s electrifying:)
Snow Patrol are absolutely brilliant!!! They take you beyond just playing music and performing, they connect with a crowd like I’ve never seen!!! It was a truly amazing experience to see them perform live!!
Panic at the Disco kept it high energy and fun the whole time!!! I enjoyed their performance- it didn’t hurt that they played all their favourites that evryone could sing along to:)
Oasis were Oasis (if that makes sense). These are the guys that said that they are bigger than the Beatles!!! Surely nobody expected them to come onto stage with dance routines and praise about what wonderful people we are in South Africa. Yes they’re arrogant, yes they don’t speak to the crowd, yes it sounds like Liam Gallagher has taken just a tad too many drugs:) But that’s what makes them Oasis. I thoroughly enjoyed their performance. I do, however, feel that Noel does sing better than Liam. I loved his performance of Don’t look Back in Anger. One of my all time favourites:)
All in all a really enjoyable day:)
Kudos for giving Golden Circle their own area-really impressed me this year!!!
Bring on 2010!!!!

Great effort coke fest all things considered. It was a pity about Bullet for my valentine & red jumpsuit pulling out at the last minute but it was beyond the organiser’s control & I hope they get their just reward. I was surprised that coke fest made a vast improvement from previous years with regards to things such as food outlets & bars. We never waited more than one person deep to get a drink & the bar staff were a pleasure.
That being said there always has to be something that wasn’t planed properly. How many golden circle tickets did coke sell or anticipate selling? The golden circle was so big that standing in the general admission section you could not see people on stage & the ridicules shape of the golden circle and sound stage probated general admission people from getting a decent view of anything. Golden circle is supposed to be an exclusive section at a concert NOT THE WHOLE CONCERT. When you are paying a premium price for a concert even if the tickets are general admission you still expect to receive your moneys worth not be lumped at the back as if you are an afterthought.
And surely the slope of the JHB venue could have been used better?
Coke fest you guys improve every year let’s hope you get it right next year…
Thanks

the south african bands were better than last years and the internatoinal acts were unbelievably tight.
we should respect these guysmusic and art of performance rather than look for aspects which may possibly dissapointment.

Wow, we sure moan a lot! We don’t often have these type of events and I am sure we are learning from our mistakes. We should be honoured to have these bands in this beautiful country. As for Oasis, yeah, they were shitty but that’s who they are. Google “Oasis concert reviews” and you’ll be surprised to read the same type of complaints about them in the states. And as for the traffic, hey is a music festival, expect traffic. When Fatboy Slim played in Brighton Beach, the traffic went on for 4 days!! (what’s 2 hours).
I just hope that Cape Town can be first next year, then Jo’burg and let’s push for bands like Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Pearl Jam, AFI, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, etc. Let’s try book them now before it’s too late.
I am sure next year will be much better (and hopefully more international bands – it just seemed to be too short this year, I was not nearly drunk enough).

Having been to every Coke Fest, I gotta say this years was the worst. Even so, I still had an awesome time! The CT venue was stunning, I hope they keep it there. YES, it took hours to get out, but what do you expect when you gotta get thousands of cars out on a single road? Apart from that I found it to be really well organised.
Really proud of the SA bands, they rocked. Z&G belong on the big stages. Sorry Panic, didn’t really know you before and I’m afraid you didn’t impress. Snow Patrol certainly put on the best show of the day, they sounded great and really worked the crowd, but for me it was all about Oasis! Bunch of arrogant, cocky poms – love it! Noel’s chirps were hilarious! “How many coke fests have you had? Four? I had way more back in my apartment in the 90’s.”
All in all, despite the bands pulling out, despite the lack of heavier music, it was a bloody good day. But don’t even think of pulling this sh#t next year Big Concerts! I wanna rock my ass off!
Rob | Apr 14, 2009 | Reply
CokeFest at CPT was so different from previous years because none of the heavy rock concert goers were there cos we didn’t have heavier bands like Metallica, Korn etc. so there were only the people who are usually the fillers this year.
CokeFest must really learn to make the Golden Circle smaller! I felt so bad for the bands because half of the crowd was so far away, and there was a HUGE gap in the middle!
oh and… Is it just me or is the headlining band usually a let-down and the second last one brilliant??? (Korn & Muse, Oasis & Snow Patrol?)
Good day overall i guess, but it ended at like 21.00.(Ridiculous, yes?)

Went to Cape Town’s coke fest. Just my wife and I, and we enjoyed every minute of it. The setting was stunning. BEAUTIFUL! Hope they have it there again. Toilets were easy to get to, plenty of drinks and food stalls, and the waiting time was minimal. Snow Patrol blew my mind away. I only know the commercial hits, but they have won me over as a fan. And like the previous posters comment : Oasis is Oasis. If you read all their concert reviews, its all the same. These guys don’t care what you think about them. They just themselves, and I love it. Their music was awesome to sing along too. I have their latest album, so unlike other “fans”, I enjoyed singing along with their new stuff. But in general, I think the day was awesome. I enjoyed myself, and I will be back next year! Traffic did suck, but it was all fun. Thats part of the experience. Can we perhaps have CPT first next year? And over a weekend? and not with a work day the next day?

One complaint I do have, is that they gave away golden circle tickets at the gates. ie: if you bought a notaml free standing ticket, you could just go ask for a golden circle ticket at the gate, and they gave you one! Thenks for wasting my money! I paid R600+ for a golden circle ticket, hoping that the price would keep the really drunken buggers, who just come there to drink all day, and cause kak, that it would keep them out! but why should I pay R600 next time a ticket, when I could just pay cheaper, and get a golden pass anyway! That sucks!

Oasis are absolute legends and I cant believe everyone seems to be complaining about them. Their banter with the crowd is not being ‘rude’ its part of the show guys, get with the program.
Snow patrol need to translate their rocking live sound to their studio albums cos they rocked with a capital ‘R’!
Panic and Zebra were awesome too.

I’m so incredibly jealous of everyone who got to see Snow Patrol live! They’re my all-time favorite band! Super glad to hear that they rocked, like I knew they would. Being a catholic, it just wouldn’t have been in good taste to go to a rock concert on Good Friday, else I would have so been there!

I thought OASIS rocked … maybe it was because it was so easy to get a drink and go to the loo!!! What a pleasure this Coke Zero Fest was!!! It was so well organised (despite the traffic on William Nicol). Last year, we missed the whole of Good Charlotte while queing for a drink and trying to use the loo. This year, Jo’burg was really well organised and it made the show so much more enjoyable. Looks like I’m in the minority but I really enjoyed the line-up and loved all the band s (‘EVOLVER’ was a nice surprise too)

I was at the CT show, and was impressed with the overall organisation, however I do have some complimets and complaints that I hope will be considered.
Well, positives first:
the venue was absolutely beautiful
the facilities were better thought out this year
PATD were true entertainers – love them or hate them they definitely picked the energy up for the crowd to rock to Snow Patrol’s brilliant performance.
now the negatives:
well, why were all the toilets on one side of the venue? maybe consider spacing them out better next year guys
there was only 1 entrance to the golden circle, but 2 exits…c’mon guys, we had to fight through the general admission’ers to get near the circle. Do what you did last year and have at least 2 entrances.
what was with the stupid sms messages people could send being played during the performances? rather put those up between shows, if you have to have them at all.
And lastly, please don’t bring Oasis back here. I don’t feel like spending R600 again to be bored and insulted by some old guys that looked like they’d rather have been anywhere else!

The Cape Town show was absolutely amazing – from the setting to the international bands. Already a big fan I was blown away by Panic at the Disco. They created an amazing atmosphere and the crowd was alive and ready for action. Their rendition of Shout and the reaction from the crowd was amazing. They are a great band to hear live. Snow Patrol carried through on the amazing vibe. I didn’t know a lot of their stuff (only the really well known songs) I walked away a Snow Patrol fan. The highlights was the band and audience singing Run, Chasing Cars, Take Back the City and
Everyone was so excited to see Oasis but then they came along and killed atmosphere – boring the audience. So much so that we left halfway through – together with a lot of other concert goers. They had no vibe and their comment about not encouraging crowd participation threw me a bit because why do a concert if you’re not interested in crowd participation? To me and others I have spoken to, it seemed like they didn’t want to be there at all.
The major criticisms I have were the singular entrance to the golden circle fighting through the general admission to get there; and the amount of alcohol that was consumed by concert goers and smoking in the crowd. We’re all there to have a good time but my version of a good time isn’t having smoke blown in my face, being burnt by cigarettes, beer spilt all over me and drunk people ruining the experience for everyone else.
Despite Oasis’ shocking performance and the criticisms above, it was the best organized Coke Fest I have been to. Thanks to Panic and Snow Patrol for saving the day. It was a good thing they came on before Oasis otherwise I would have left and the concert would have been a complete waste of time and money.

I went to the cpt show, my first ever! and that’s because none of my friends love rock music. the venue was grt, the weather didn’t dissappoint either. the highlight was def Snowpatrol! they performed just before sunset into the evening – what a magnificent scene – the heldeberg mountain in the backdrop.
why or why would they not having taps by the loos? with all the ‘fast’food being sold- it’s a wonder there are were no food poisoning cases
the parking must be sorte out. we started another party just weighing to get out.

The cpt concert rocked! – except the headline band – they sucked but i loved their attitude / arrogance! The SA bands (Z&G and Cassette)deserve international stages – what an awesome performance.
Cpt’s venue was just appropriate – next time though i should just cycle to the venue – to spend 2hour trying to negotiate my way out of the parking lot is no fun.
Snowpatrol stole the show – THEY should have been the headline band. I must admit I was a bit embarrased with my lipsinking to all the songs- I’ve always thought their music was for teenagers – so i’ve been a closeted fan who owns 3 of their albums. Their performance though – i couldnt be bothered i sang my lungs out!
What i failed to understand was why have rules that you cant enforce. No cameras were allowed yet everywhere you looked people were clicking away, and promoters advertising websites to post the pic at. What’s the point of that stupid rule then.
One last thing – the cape town crowd needs to untie their groove knots a bit – what a dull crowd – loosen up capetonians! life’s too short.

I was at the CT Coke Fest and it rocked!!
I was impressed with Cassette, think the singer has got a great voice and is a good songwriter / performer. Now they need to take it to the next level.
Zebra and the Dirty’s were awesome! Totally rocked it – either band could play Reading or Glastonbury and dominate.
Not that I’m such a big Panic fan, but my personal opinion was that it wasn’t a clever move playing songs no-one really knows for the first 2/3 of the set and then finishing off with 3 or 4 hits. They should have mixed it up a bit. Keeping in mind that bands are like sports teams – they don’t perform excellently every gig/game, I do think they are a bit over-rated though.
Snow Patrol were the opposite! Started, continued and ended with hits! Wow, one thing that really impressed me was their dynamics (soft and louds). They really transmitted the emotions in the music across very well. It was good of them to pay homage to Oasis.
Oasis – plain and simple… legends! In typical Liam and Noel style, they were cocky and witty (Noel: “In the 90’s I used to have a lot of coke fests at my house!”). The band were solid musically, Liam on form vocally and Noel letting it be known what a great guitarist (and vocalist) he is. The highlight of their set for me was Noel’s guitar solo in Champagne Supernova. There was no doubt that he was the best guitarist there by miles. Great tone too. Anyone who slagged off their CT show really does not know much about the band and for that reason couldn’t relate to them.

@Rob : Spot on. your review was well written. You just have to take Oasis for who they are. They had a live performance on MTV the one night, and they performed the exact same songs, in the exact same manner. Its just the brothers doing what they do best. Enjoy it. these guys have been in the business long, so they don’t care about critism, so just ignore their attitude, and enjoy their music. I did, and I thought the entire festival was awesome!

Cape Town – Coke Fest Rocked!
I was really inspired by the enormous growth in South African Music over the past decade, well done to all the local bands! They delivered a professional live performance, backed up by quality music and good attitude, definitely marketable to the ‘international music industry’ – no doubt, very exciting!
Great to have 3 overseas acts in our country, regardless of who they were – end of story.
Snow Petrol: Totally lived up to their current popularity and hype, good show! They owned the crowd and gave them everything they asked for, and a little more… Duly noted, they were genuine to the crowd & supportive of their peer/senior Oasis.
Oasis: A big band, that made a serious mark in British Rock ‘n’ Roll, and they visited our country. WOW! – What a privilege. Their unique stage presence and humor is definitely an acquired taste, which once you have attained a palate for, is nothing short of magic. Opening up their set with ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’, playing a bunch of hits in the middle and closing with ‘I Am The Walrus’ – what more could any oasis fan or true muso ask for!
Glad I was there!

mmmmmmm well in all honesty perhapes if I was a millionaire and could afford the drinks (alcholic and non) well it might have been a little more pleasant due to the numbing effect, of the drinks. I suppose i should start with COKE – your advertising was amazing clearly you could not miss the fact that coke was a sponsor. However R10 for a coke or water – come on guys what do we look like – our economy is already bad however you ripped us off. FREE dodge water if you were squished in front is what you gave us………. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING….. A few button badges and some sweeties oh yes and a plastic braclet did not make me feel very special. The problem is that no one saw a mention of BIG Concerts (except on our pink badges) SO all the complaining was against COKE – and it is seen as a COKE only function. Jack Daniels . . . R30 for a shot ARE YOU FOR REAL…… oh yes with a R10 coke, my wallet thought it knew the word BARE however you guys gave new meaning to this word. BIG CONCERTS My hubby and I see few luxeries in life however bought our tickets nearly 2 months before so we could be GOLDEN CIRLCLE ooooooooo, only to find that tickets were not only being sold the day before the concert but golden circle pink bands were handed out by big bouncers to “pretty chicks” I dont think I have EVER experienced that amount of people in a golden cirlcle in my entire life. It was like a stampede & perhapes for the big boys upstairs this would be a huge “profit” for them as a South African (of not the richest class) felt appaulded by the conditions we had to endure for the day. Getting out of the circle was a joke – as people got angry and agressive with people around them standing on their things. And who can blame them – and i was at the only little tree in the circle the whole eveing and witnessed people becoming so angry i was shocked – even the band dirt skirts had a nasty run in with a man behind me that would not let them pass. My hubby could not even get out to go to the loo. He eventually came back upset and said he would wait. Security could not handle the stampede coming in and out of that circle. I was stopped 3 times in one go going in to have my bag checked as hundreds passed by me without a word…??? Location – was not bad – i felt it was closer than the last venue (me coming from pta) and parking was handled well – lighting was execlent too. BANDS Our SA bands should really really be chosen with utmost consideration – as we go on stage with international bands, Besides one or so of our 5 bands I was dissapointed and amused that we could put such amatuer bands on stage (how embarresing) that afrikaans / arabian band – I did not even know he was singing Afrikaans till about 3 songs in – I actually asked my friend what language he was singing.
Snow patrol and panic were very good – they had a stage presence that was amazing – OASIS was dissapointing – giving us the feel that they were there only because they choose to be – thousands left by about their 4th song. But that is no ones fault. Overall I thought after paying R600 for a ticket and being made to feel no more special than the Joe next to me – I am dissapointed in how it all went down. And not only that i am so bankrupt now its not funny – I am amazed however no one else has said anything about this since I overheard many people complaining.
Cindy | Apr 17, 2009 | Reply
Cindy, what are you on about when you say Foto Na Dans are Arabian??? Just curious as to what you are thinking! They are an awesome Afrikaans band! But each to his own, and tastes do differ.
We all know by now that if you go to any kind of big event, you are going to be ripped off as far as food and drink goes. This is no state secret, it happens every single time.
As for Golden Circle being crowded, it always is and that is why I choose to go general admission rather, it affords me more room to move, easier access to everything else including the bar and the loo. It is just more comfortable, bottom line.
I had a blast at the fest. Yes, we had to endure the drunkards, but they are always there and this is a music fest, not a tea party. I will go again next year for sure.

Rockchic, I understand your point, however this chat line asked for an honest opionion – how can we ever change anything if we dont speak out. I happen to know someone high up in Coke and he was very interested to know HOW THEY CAN IMPROVE things. Change only comes about when we are not complacent. I love Rock FEST and all the drunks that was never my issue – but honestly I just wanted to speak out – and i realise lots of people will be offended but it was never for them – This chat is for Coke and Big Concert to get feedback.
I have been Golden Circle before and it has NEVER been that full – It was so full if there was a stampede people would have died.
Foto Na dans – may be an awesome band – in a small bar or maybe they were having a bad day. I however found them amueture and not of a very high standard, I could not even hear what language they were singing, their music was a little out the box(which is fine) and hence the arabic sound in the beginning – and yes we are all allowed our taste in music, I will after your comment make a plan to go see them live again – and not judge from first apperance – this was never my intetion to upset – BUT feedback for perhapes a better BLAST next year.
Cindy | Apr 17, 2009 | Reply
I am so not upset Cindy, hence my comment about everyone being entitled to their opinion, and in return I was merely stating mine.
One thing I cannot agree with though is your comment that the Golden Circle was full. It was empty! I had never seen such a sad, empty looking golden circle before. There was a huge gap between where I was standing, quite close to the fencing that separates GC from general admission, and the golden circle dudes looked like they were kilometers away. I guess your sense of it being full comes more from the fact that everyone who was in GC wanted to stand as close to the front as possible end therefore ended up pushing and shoving.

My buddys were pretty dissapionted when the last 2 bands were pulled thus my entire crew decided to give it a skip. If I were the sort of person to do bands alone, I probably would have attended. From the sounds of it there were good and bad experiences but the advice I give to my friends and to all music lovers is 2 go in with no expectations and you will definately leave with a heart beating to the drum beat, a spirit soaring from the feel of being surrounded by live music and happy people, and a smile on your face that is worth every cent that you spent. Remeber that its all about the music and the people. Your experiance will always be what you make of it. I will definately not miss the next one.
