Line-up change

Unfortunately we have been told today that two bands are unable to make it to 2009′s Coke Zero Fest in South Africa.

International bands not coming anymore:

  • Bullet for my valentine
  • Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

We are still waiting for official word on what will happen further! Check computicket for more information.

It will still be an awesome day out nonetheless with the following lineup:

  • OASIS
  • SNOW PATROL
  • PANIC! AT THE DISCO
  • THE DIRTY SKIRTS
  • ZEBRA AND GIRAFFE
  • CASSETTE
  • FOTO NA DANS
  • ONE DAY REMAINS (JHB only)
  • AKING (CT only)

BIG Concerts, the organisers of Coca-Cola Zero Fest 2009, regrettably announce the cancellation of Bullet For My Valentine and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, who were scheduled to perform.

Both bands, who have concluded performance agreements with the promoter and have received payment in lieu of their performance, decided at the last minute to withdraw on their commitments to Coca-Cola Zero Fest 2009.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus cited personnel changes, which impacted on their ability to perform at the fest, while Bullet For My Valentine cited studio commitments, as they complete their new studio album.

BIG Concerts CEO, Attie Van Wyk said, “We are absolutely devastated by the cancellation of these two bands. Not only have they not fulfilled their agreements with us, but they have let their South African fans down in the biggest possible manner. And all at the last minute, leaving us in an unfortunate position of not being able to find suitable replacements at such short notice.”
Zayd Abrahams, Coca-Cola™ Strategic Marketing Manager, said: “Coca-Cola Zero is disappointed by the withdrawal of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Bullet For My Valentine; we are however looking forward to the awesome performances from Oasis, Snow Patrol, and Panic! At the Disco and some of the best home-brewed talent. All concert experiences that have been planned are going ahead and consumers can still expect a world-class production. “

Bullet For My Valentine have apologised to their fans in South Africa. Matt Tuck says: “We’re absolutely gutted to have to cancel these shows, we were proper looking forward to it, but we are really getting stuck in with writing new songs and we have a busy schedule to get everything prepared for recording the new album ‐ which we are all really excited about!”

Ticket holders are able to get a full refund for their tickets from Computicket if they so wish. This offer stands until Friday 17 April 2009.

Fans have an added bonus this weekend: OASIS, SNOW PATROL and PANIC AT THE DISCO will play extended performances at Coca-Cola Zero Fest. The fest has loads to offer this weekend – Big Sound, Bold Artists, Zero Heroes, Mist Angels, Chill Zones, Guitar Heroes and Zero Zones.

  1. Oh well, I just heard it on the radio as well.
Looks like I’m goin to get my refund tomorrow…

Can’t really blame the Coke Fest for it, its the bands that cancelled. Funny I expected this of Oasis and I was looking forward to Bullet!!!!

  7. The only reason i bought a golden circle ticket was to go see Red Jumpsuit. I think this is unacceptable, surely a contract must be signed or something. You cant get people to buy tickets by advertising two big international acts and then 2 days before the concert allow them to pull out. This is really unacceptable.

  8. I hope all the Bullet fans decide to get refunds and not come anymore! That would make the concert so much better!

  9. Maybe they should think of adding a few more SA bands to make up for the loss of the two international bands. I vote Voodoo Child and Evolver (for a change to the normal boring same bands that these festivals book – example Prime Circle – for all the PC fans I am not dissing PC I just want the other SA Bands to get their turn). Hey bring aKing to JHB too.

And for the rest of us: unfortunately, if you want to see your fav bands and not be disappointed, u hav to go overseas. its the sad truth… if a albino metalhead from langa can do it, so can yous!

  16. That is so pathetic!

I’ve been so anxious to watch bullet for my valentine peform… been counting down the days because we don’t get allot of metal bands touring to SA and this could have been the mark of more bands to come, now they go and screw us over! Just because they want finish a album, a album that I will more than like not buy now! They make a album to promote a band, cash up and sell live events…wtf…where’s the live event now?

Been counting down the days to one of my favorite bands along side killswitch, lamb of god, inflames and so on… Such a disappointment guys…

First Gun and roses now this…Doesn’t the event organisers have some kind of contract or written and signed agreement to secure the artist and prevent them from pulling out of the event. And for lame reasons such as “We’re absolutely gutted to have to cancel these shows, we were proper looking forward to it, but we are really getting stuck in with writing new songs and we have a busy schedule to get everything prepared for recording the new album”…

Come on!!!! Were you really looking forward to the fest? You have a busy schedule due to events like this and FANS like US! Gutted? Riiiggghhhtttt….. well now they have more time to go play with themselves do to this misfortunate cancelation… Hope the next band will actually play and the Coke Fest Event Organisers properly secure their performance.

  20. Well I can’t say I’m surprised. This kakfest has just been one f@ck-up after another from the beginning. Only thing I am surprised about is that it was those 2 that cancelled, not Oasis.

Anyway, so now that there are 3 absolutely kak international bands left, I can see the majority of ticket holders getting a refund. I see empty stadiums this weekend.

Strategically, this means one of two things: a) Coke will get their act together and do things properly next year (which hopefully includes getting a decent line-up), or b) 2009 is the last year that we have a coke fest. As sad as that would be, after the debacle this year I suspect we might end up with option b.

  23. BiancaPret, I disagree, the whole Zero Coke Fest 2009 was poorly planned from the start, the orginizers didn’t pay any attention to the demand majority – I bet you the only reason why Bullet and RJA are not playing is because they were told how many people will be visiting Coke Fest 2009.They don’t wanne be playing in front of 10 Koos fans shouting Oasis like a fag!

I CAN”T BELIEVE THEY WOULD DO THIS TO SO MANY SOUTH AFRICANS WHO HAVE BEEN WANTING TO SEE THEM FOR SO LONG! As a die-hard metal fan, COKEFEST WAS THE THING I LOOKED FOREWARD TO MOST IN THE YEAR OF 2009, but i am now forced to refund my golden circle ticket as BFMV and TRJA are not playing. 600 RAND IS ALOT OF MONEY, AND I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO NOT SCREAM AT THIS ENTIRE SITUATION… What has been put in my mind now is that if BFMV does not care about playing at cokefest, then i simply dont care in supporting them!!! SIMPLE AS THAT~~~~~

I personally, and all my friends will be getting a refund and this is the last time I will ever go to a Coke Fest I am done with getting stuffed around like this two years in a row. 42. lol, need any 1 say more – think there’s going to be 10 people at the 2009 fest!Refunding mine.
Unfortnuanitly for the pop/rock fans the majority of RSA fans want hardrock/metal bands:
    Bullet,In Flames, Radio Head,Slipknot,Marilyn Manson, Tool,Killswitch Ingage, Shadows Fall, Atreyu,Billy Talent,Green day,Avenged Sevenfold, As I Lay Dying,Underoath, Trivium.
This is what happens to a festival if you don’t produce what the majority of the people want.
An idea for next year – arrange two shows, 1 metal show with any bands listed above and another show with the soft bands like this year!
I promise you that the metal show will be sold out!

This weren’t the first international bands to cancel their tours to south africa (think devildriver). Its just one big disappointment after the other. Even if they do bring a band like linkin park to our country, i won’t get excited until the minute i finally see them onstage. That might be the only way to avoid disappointment

They are really good and they are local! We dont give our SA bands enough credit so maybe we should slot some of the less known guys in such as “You name in Neon” – AWESOME!!!! They won the Battle for Woodstock. Also “Japan and I” are REALLY cool and so much fun!

Oasis, Snow Patrol and Panic are still going to be cool!
Next year, Coke Fest is going to be the BEST live music festival EVER! For now, I am happy that there are going to be bands, people, fun and singing for a day that would otherwise be quite boring and uneventful in JHB! I mean, what else is there REALLY to do?

Why dont the bands include US in important tours? Why do so many bands cancel? This is Bull! I dont believe those shitty reasons. They must’ve had an argument with Big Concerts or something. 128. Garry, I agree. But we still dont give the local guys enough support. I am all for local music and I think we have awesome talent here. It does suck that the international guys pulled out, but we still have three that are staying. All the guys who are going to the fest this year are going to have fun, and we probably wont sink in the mud in the beer tent this year. Its really what you make of it at the end of the day! I went to Woodstock in Harrismith and it rained buckets for days! There was mud everywhere, but we made the most of it, had fun, saw some really AWESOME bands and never had any regrets – other than losing a shoe or two to the mud…
I know these bands are not everyone’s scene, but we will still support the fest as there is nothing cooler than live music and beer on a sunny SA day!
And if by ANY chance the organisers do manage to pull some stings and get some local metal bands, it will just be a cherry on top!

  134. I’m with dot-dot-dot on this one – if they’d had a decent line-up overall, there wouldn’t be such an outcry over 2 bands canceling. The year Guns & Roses canceled, we were pissed off, but at least there were still decent bands to watch. Now there’s a total of 3 international bands, of which one is completely over the hill and gay, and the other two are just gay.

    WTF | Apr 8, 2009 | Reply

  135. Every year, the list of international bands are shortened but the price of tickets increase. Will we only have 2 bands next year? Surely they must have a steadfast contract in place? And if they still receive a penalty fee from these bands, surely they can give us a 40% discount back on our tickets. I don’t want to refund my ticket because I still want to see the other bands but why should I still pay full price, how do they justify that? Very, very disappointed, I think people will think twice before buying tickets next year. Maybe we need to turn to Virginfest for better results, oh wait, they couldn’t get it right either! Maybe Pepsi?

Something else must have set it off in a big way, i mean to find out about scheduling conflicts that late is entirely up to recording or management companies….so there is your f**k up, not the band but the higher powers that be. Who do u believe anyway,i mean the venue changes to a smaller spot, tickets stay the same price and all of a sudden a cancellation……makes u think doesn’t it maybe they cancelled a long time ago but promoters just used the names to sell the tickets…………my theory and i’m sticking to it…..we only get a fest like this once a year, so go and make the bast of it.

I think that is a clear indicator that the BANDS – Bullet and Red Jumpsuit – are to blame for this, NOT the organiser.

If they were trying to be sneaky and rip you off you WOULD have until the festival starts (2 days) to refund, but you have another whole week afterward. It shows that the organisers also got seriously shafted by this lack of professionalism.

I just don’t think it’s fair to spin the public bullsh*t. I hope bullet and Red jumpsuit pay for the losses and reschedule tours for next year to make up for this.

  192. The chances of Bullet coming back for another tour is NOTHING! BIG Concerts would never bring them back after pulling a stunt like this! Bullet is still my favorite band, but think they don’t really think of their fans when they bullshit us. I mean, why are they still performing on the 17th overseas? Shouldn’t they still be busy with whatever keeps them out of SA 4 days earlier?

  205. Worst coke fest ever!!!

Snow Patrol was awesome, but the rest sucked @ss! I’ve never heard such poor sound quality at a concert – I couldn’t make out any of the lyrics, especially with Oasis. We ended up leaving in the middle of the Oasis set only to find the parking area already flooded with cars trying to leave.

So nice job Coke Cola and Big Concerts: poor line from the start, stuff-up with the venue, bands not showing up, and then the terrible sound setup on the day. I guess we shouldn’t be looking forward to next year as I imagine few international acts will subject themselves to what we’ve seen here.

Can’t believe I forked out R 600. ZERO fest indeed.

  209. Personally I have never even heard of the two bands who cancelled. So I couldn’t care less. Those of you who don’t seem to think that Oasis is a big enough draw card need to educate themselves on what this band has done.

Oasis sold more albums with their first album than all the other bands at this festival will sell in their entire careers combined. That’s not to mention the absurd success they received with their follow up album “whats the story morning glory”. We should be be very proud that legendary acts such as Oasis even come to South Africa.

  210. Just because your on the commercial music train doesn’t mean you have any talent.

    Wayne | Apr 12, 2009 | Reply

  211. I’m with Wayne. Britney Spears also sold a lot of albums. Does that mean I should jump at the opportunity to go see her? I think not.

As for “Oasis sold more albums with their first album than all the other bands at this festival will sell in their entire careers combined” – 2 points: 1) that’s because the entire line-up was pathetic, and 2) their first 2 albums were released 15 years ago – what have they done since then? That officially makes them has-beens.

I’m proud that such legendary acts as Chris Cornell, Metallica and Staind came to South Africa. Oasis isn’t even a blip on that radar.

    WTF | Apr 13, 2009 | Reply

  212. @WTF: you’re a moron. I don’t know how you can slate Oasis as has-beens without applying that same rule to Metallica. They both released their greatest albums decades ago and they’re both still releasing platinum-selling albums today.

And how anyone can consider Staind a legendary band is beyond me – they are a pale imitation of the real grunge/metal bands that came before them such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tool, etc.

    Z0MG | Apr 13, 2009 | Reply

  213. @ZoMG – difference is, Oasis make shitty music, which was in fashion 15 years ago. Metallica is a real rock band that makes good music (with the exception of Saint Anger which was shite), and their music has never been popular because of fashion. Oasis is a pop band, not a rock band. As for Staind, they are 10 times the band that Oasis ever was or ever will be.

You can be glad you didn’t say anything about Chris Cornell, otherwise I’d have had to come and bitch slap you.

    WTF | Apr 13, 2009 | Reply

  214. @ZoMG – compare the certifications. Last time Oasis had a platinum or even a gold in the US was in 1997. Whereas Metallica’s had multiplatinums with each of their albums including Death Magnetic in at least US and Canada, and either platinum or gold in the UK.

Also, take a look at the nominations. Shame, poor Oasis hasn’t won any grammies (only 2 nominations). Whereas, how many grammies has Metallica won? Nine grammies. And how many nominations? Eight nominations.

When was Oasis’ last nomination? 1999? Oh look, in 2009 Metallica won 2 grammies and got another 2 nominations.

So with that, I have proven that unlike Oasis, Metallica are not has-beens.

  215. Okay…I think that the concert was INCREDIBLE…

They managed just fine without RJA and BFMV…Panic at The Disco and Snow Patrol certainly stole the show in my opinion…I would have paid R600 just to go watch those two play again…

I must admit, the South African bands rocked that venue quite hard…One Day Remains kicked the show off with a bang and it only got better from there (Although I didnt really enjoy Foto Na Dans as much as i do in their music videos)……

Evolver kinda stole the show from a South African band perspective, but Cassette I think wins the crowd favorite for their video…(If you havent seen it yet check it out here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBmfu1eORkE)

The Dirty Skirts & Zebra & Giraffe also put on a great show, further proving to me that South Africa ha some MASSIVELY talented bands and artists….

Now lets get down to Oasis……From a musical perspective they were Bloody Brilliant…I enjoyed listening to every song…BUT…and this is a big BUT….Their on stage presence was not fantastic…Their sarcastic comments about South Africa(ie: how crap we are going to do in the world cup) got a lot of people slightly annoyed…..I think that they realize that they are Oasis and think that they dont really need to try very hard on stage because either way people are gonna love them… Having said that, they really did play a great set and I am extremely glad to have seen them…

Guys you really shouldn’t have canceled your tickets, I think it was WAAAAAY worth the money….I enjoyed it….

Man, on a positive note Cokefest this year was AWESOME! Snow Patrol blew everyone away, they were just so fantastic. Oasis was great too but I agree with the poster above about their lack of stage-presence. Maybe its because Snow Patrol rocked out so hard before them.

Either way, it was such a huge success, no one cared that the stupid emo kids and metal wannabes didn’t show up, no one missed them, and there were TENS OF THOUSANDS of people.

THE PEOPLE showed Coca Cola that S.A. wants Cokefest to happen, no matter what 0.9% of the ticket holders who got refunds think.

  221. Fest was a jol – beer was a bit expensive but at least it only took about 2 mins to get a pint. Snow Patrol was the best of the bands – Z and G were also good. Oasis on the other hand, sucked piles. I’ve always been an Oasis fan .. it doesn’t matter when they had number 1′s or whether they won Grammies or not .. fact is, they have fantastic music. (For those whining about WHEN they had hits – that’s irrelevant – unless you’re into Britney Spears and other poppy crap which is only good while the fashion lasts). I specifically went to see Oasis but there performance was toxic. Their attitude was pathetic and Liam must learn how to use a mic. Noel thinks he’s the mustard but his act centered around balancing a tambourine on his melon or chewing on it. They (specifically Noel) acted as if they’ve done us a huge favour by coming to SA. I was seriously disappointed by their crap attitude and their snobbish performance.

  222. 28,000… That may well explain why bands pulled out and the venue changed? Ticket sale requirements are standard in band riders and B/Concerts would not want to pay for the excess capacity at the race track. The bands didnt screw you, the organisers who didnt market properly caused the changes…
Everyone that I know who attended the show, did so on “free tickets” and most got golden circle freebies…

    Kak bands, kak turnout.

Must just add that although I am a natural born rocker – a night of only metal and rock acts is piss boring… however what were Z&G doing there?

    Dank | Apr 15, 2009 | Reply

  223. @Dank – you’re 99% there – but you said that the organisers didn’t market properly – that’s not the case, rather the organisers didn’t analyse the market properly – if they had, they’d have realised that O-ass-is was not the right type of band to headline this fest. But I reckon a big part of the problem is that the people responsible for this festival (either at Coke or Big Concerts) left the arrangements until the last minute, and had to settle for whatever was available on touring schedules. I.e. Ofagsis.
