SA Bands for My Coke Fest 2008 announced!

Only SA’s best can quench your music thirst, and that’s why Coca-Cola in association with 5FM are thrilled to announce the line up of local bands performing at MY COKE FEST 08. The festival, which kicks off in Johannesburg on Friday the 21st at the New Market Racecourse, and then hits Cape Town on Monday the 24th of March 2008, at Kenilworth Racecourse, is already set to be the biggest music festival this year!

Already converted to the “Coke side of life”, are some of the most sought after and alternative bands in the world, and now playing alongside KORN, MUSE, CHRIS CORNELL, KAISER CHIEFS, GOOD CHARLOTTE, 30 SECONDS TO MARS and PRIME CIRCLE, the highly anticipated local line-up includes:

*WONDERBOOM*, *CRASH CAR BURN*, *LONEHILL ESTATE*, *VAN COKE KARTEL*, and the *SHY GUEVARAS*

Brought to you by Coca-Cola and official radio station 5fm, the 2-date, all day, adrenalin fuelled festival is definitely hottest line-up to date! Thousands of ticket holders already thought so, which means you need to get yours now!

WONDERBOOM, CRASH CAR BURN and LONEHILL ESTATE will only be performing in Johannesburg, and VAN COKE KARTEL and SHY GUEVARAS will only be performing in Cape Town!

  3. I must agree, South Africa has lot of fantastic hard rock bands, why not add them to the line up. This is more of a hard rock event isn’t it? What about 16 Stitch, surely they would be more suited? Otherwise I think it is going to be great! When do we see the official line up?

  4. Shame – pity about the local lineup. As the previous 2 posters have said – SA has fantastic hard rock bands who would compliment the likes of Korn, Muse, Chris Cornell. I will be arriving at cokefest later then – to see the international acts.

It’s a disappointment, and a real shame. I have nothing against the local bands on the lineup, don’t get me wrong, but said lineup would work better with mellow radio rock international bands. When will we learn?? You know Fieldy & Munky from Korn run their own hard rock / metal labels? It’s a pity they don’t have a SA band on the bill worth scouting.

  5. Being my first myCoke event I also expected a bit more, Wonderboom’s cool and I’ve always wanted to see Tweak so bring on Crash Car Burn, but where is Springbok Nude Girls, The Narrow and even The Parlotones…?

  6. Have you guys actually heard the Shy Guevarras???? They are without doubt the best rock band in sa at the moment – do yourself a favour and go see.

    Interloper | Feb 4, 2008 | Reply

  7. Yeah I’ve seen Shy Guavaras live. Not bad. I’m in Joburg, so won’t catch them though. I think maybe CrashCarBurn would work with Good Charlotte & 30 Seconds To Mars (the emo / pop thing). But the rest of the SA lineup is depressing and I don’t believe representative at all of what this country has to offer. All the guys asking for Parlotones – sure that’s ok, when Coldplay come here.

  11. Although I am Wonderboom fan, I’m disappointed not to see The Narrow and 16 Stitch on the line-up – they definitely go better with the international bands’ genre. Also – I agree – why Prime Circle again – there are so many harder SA bands than those on the line-up and if anyone saw The Narrow at Woodstock they’re wondering why they’re not playing this gig!!

  20. Last years line-up was by far better than this year’s. I was blown away by the way SA bands like BoB, who started the CT gig, and my fav, Taxi Violence, etc etc, got the ppl rocking out with their c0cks out during the midday heat, argumentally better than the international acts did. Luckily we’ve got Van (note, Eng ppl, that’s not Van like panelVAN ;) ) Coke Cartel and Shy Guevaras rocking at the CT gig, but we need more!!

  21. ja pragtig and all. korn is gonna be cool to see, but the rest is not really that sharp. how about next year you try and get Chevelle,Soil or maybe Disturbed?and if you really wanna be cool, get Iron Maiden! and put in better SA bands, like The Narrow, 16 Stitch or Pestroy, whats up with Prime Circle? Its a ROCK fest!not a school party. come on dammit, maybe next year Coca Cola should ask suggestions for bands WE want THEM to invite? sweet, thanx for trying though

  22. Guys i love music, Now that a nice big nu-metal act like Korn is coming you are putting softcore acts like Crash Car Burn etc, i mean guys, i dont wanna be ugly but what are you thinking, metal heads will come see Korn, not people who listen to club tracks. Yes i know you do it so everyone can come and enjoy, but its a rock/metal event. I mean i would love to see Korn or 30 sec to Mars, but i wont pay those prices because all you are doing is promoting bands that arnt suited for this kinda gig. Now they are all talented acts in their own rights, however just not suited. Why not put band like Pestroy, Blood Line, The Narrow, or some SA Metal bands. I mean i even heard a rumor that Metal Gods Metallica said something about the line up, not because it was bad, just because of the style the other bands. Well maybe i am wrong, but hey…

  24. Agreed! 3 years later local stations wake up to Parletones! Yeah they good but heard it all before, Oppikoppi X6 Woodstock Metalica! WTF? Oh SA music rocks and they using the same bands year in and out! Knaves new song rocks,Chromium kicks arse, The Narrow??? Our pretty in pink DJ’s dont bother going to smaller venues to notice these brilliant bands. They have no idea what South Africans are looking for!! This is Korn for sh*ts sake! Give Chromium the recognition they deserve!

  25. Man – we have some pretty angry local rock fans here!! Check this out – it’s an excerpt from Jo Day’s ‘The Zine’ Newsletter Nov 2007 (some of you may have read this already):

“One couldn’t be blamed for expecting the likes of, say, Misericord, Sacrifist, Nemesis Army, Chromium, Knave, RhutZ, Forever Will Burn, Pestroy, Underbelly, Deity’s Muse, Torment, Prevail, Albino Beach, Shu, Agro, Hokum, Namuh… or indeed any of the literally dozens of sh1t-hot SA metal / hard rock / alternative bands to be booked on a bill with Muse, KoRn and co, not so? (And if I didn’t mention your band, sorrie. This issue’s already running at 25+ pages, okay?)”

“Unfortunately, judging by past Coke Fests, it seems that the local acts booked for these things are pretty much only those that get airplay on 5fm. A rule that apparently doesn’t apply to the overseas acts, who are of course way too heavy for The Format.”

“The paradoxical result is that top SA commercial bands (NB: I’m not disputing their talent) end up opening not only for international commercial acts, but also for the alternative acts who come here – when in fact we have plenty of worthy SA bands of more compatable genres to the KoRns, Muses and Metallicas who are denied a chance to shine. Weird.”

“I suppose 5fm and Coca-Cola SA ought to be congratulated for coming up with such an ingenious way of making bux off the tens of thousands of fans starved for Rock music here in SA, whilst simultaneously managing to: a) avoid giving Rock any airplay, and b) avoid giving local Rock bands any exposure. Crafty.”

  26. Ok I’ve read all of this and i think the organisers should do something to make this happen! I used to live in SA and I’m coming to visit earlier(and by doing that having to take my exams 3 weeks earlier) just to see the concert… come on people just make it happen, I don’t want to be ashamed of us and let people think that our “rock” bands are this mellow.Please.

  27. i think there is a general consensus on what should be our local line up, and i for one do not beleive acts such as prime circle should be opening for bands as awesome as korn and muse. i completely agree with all above who vote Knave; the Narrow and 16 stitch!!!! if this is the local lineup i won’t be bored out of my F***ing skull till the international bands get on stage!

so for the price of the ticket and the fact that 20 bands are playing! stop your moaning biatches and be greatful for what you get!

  34. Agreed! We should be grateful. But we only have this kinda event once a year and therefore want it to be perfect!!!!!

One can’t deny the fact that the majority of the SA’n population would rather want to listen to The Narrow, 16 Stitch, Knave and Chromium and other METAL/HARD ROCK/ALTERNATIVE bands.

  35. Hey Josh-man I totally agree with you I’m from SA
and like you said it’s a Rock Festival. Since My Coke Fest was introduced it’s become one of the biggest Rock Fests to date. I hope it continues to do so as Oppikoppi has.

I’m mainly going for Muse one of the best live rock bands out there. The awards speak for themselves.

I would like to make a list for My Coke Fest 2009:

International: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Green Day or Smashing Pumpkins(Main Band)
    Linkin Park
Flyleaf(Anybody heard of them they kick serious ass)
    Seether or Sterophonics
    P.O.D
My Chemical Romance or The White Stripes
    Papa Rouch
    The Used
    Deftones

    SA Bands:
    Pestroy

I would like to agree with the majority of comments..They could have done so much better for the S.A bands..Nudies,The Narrow or something a bit harder..The guys from korn are gonna think we are a bunch of pu%*@# in this country..We need to blow them outta the water so that they can spread the word to other hard core bands to come over..I mean and i quote “might as well have Dozie play at the show”..But other than that its gonna be a total blast..KORN KORN and KORN…Rock on guys.

  40. Its sad that such commercial acts have been chosen to support International Progressive Hard Rock Bands. There are many more artistically integral bands in South Africa, doing new things that break ground even overseas, for eg: Lark, Albinobeach, Isochronous, Instead its just the same old same old, run of the mill radio friendly stuff, that shows how uncreative 5fm thinks South Africans are.

    Peter Angelis | Feb 19, 2008 | Reply

  41. Yup … one can only agree with JoDay…
I mean let’s just look at the first Coke Fest where the poor Parlotones were left with a handful of people because … let’s face it, the people who came to see Metallica and the likes … were simply not interested. Nothing against the parlotones … but seriously … let’s think before we throw the bands on. Just because they’re “big” names (and i use the term “big” loosely because half of south africa doesn’t get the opportunity of hearing gr8 bands such as the ones Jo-Day spoke of). I mean guys – AGRO!!! They played Wacom (sp) open air in Germany!!! That makes Coke Fest look like a drop in the ocean??? And Kobus is just about to play some massive overseas festival??? So what is up with picking our own local acts to play here? I mean – firstly – the cost would be kept down and 2ndly we could save bands like the parlotones from sheer embarrassment! Go have another squizz at Jo Day’s list and then look up these bands on myspace or facebook or just simply google … these bands deserve a slot on a stage like Coke Fest (if they didn’t, i dont see why some of them are being picked for overseas events?)

  48. Muse are absolutely amazing. Now don’t get me wrong, 30 Seconds To Mars and Korn are great, but if they headline I will kill myself. You will find that Muse have the most devoted fanbase of all the bands, and have been voted Best Live Act multiple times by multiple sources. They mix all genres together in their live shows, mixing in riffs from jazzy stuff (piano things), metal (Rage Against The Machine), and classic rock (Led Zeppelin) to please everyone. I GUARANTEE you, if any other act headlines, Muse fans won’t be able to get into it, but just LISTEN ONCE to Muse live stuff and you’ll realise that EVERYBODY will be able to get into Muse. I mean, don’t go by that poll, for Gods sake there isn’t even a link to it on BigConcerts.co.za.

Otherwise, good job on the bands you got, they’re all amazing apart from Good Charlotte, wish Van Coke was playing in Jhb

  81. 5 FM are not getting behind the bands and their airplay of these bands is pathetic. So to all at 5fm WAKE UP!! Take a trip anywhere in the world where bands are about to play – then you’ll know what true radio support means. For instance, just got back from Dubai where KORN headlined day 1 of the Dubai Desert Rock Fest and MUSE headlined day 2. The local stations played KORn’s latest CD almost track for track as well as MUSE brilliant Black holes and Revelations CD track by track people!! Oh well, if our radio stations insist on being useless and sidelining good Rock to 1am in the morning, we’ll have no choice but to educate each other on matters of good taste. Starting now, go out and get Korn’s latest CD and a couple of their back catalogue. As for Muse (best most original band out there at the moment..no question)- if you dont have the following CDs already – you poor thing!… Go out and get Absolution, Origin of Symmatry and Black Holes.

  87. oms i think u should ask tuks FM for some advice on real music for the show!!! i mean.. what a waste of time.. yea they good bands for local but they ARENT RIGHT FOR THIS SHOW!!! i agree with majority, why waste time on them when there is so much better southafrican metal/hardrock/rock talent out there!!! it would be the best show ever if you could just put the bands already stated such as:Pestroy, Chromium, Knave, The Narrow, facing the gallows, your name in neon, sacrifist i mean come on :( its a major dissapointment.. MAJOR!!

    SO……

PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEE reconsider it and let them play at the CT show!!!!! :D

    Thanks…

  97. Jonathan – your brainless head should be easy to bury under the sand. It should sink easily along with the rest of your body. I’ll be sure to find a suitable landfill for it along with the rest of the worthless garbage I throw out each day. The only thing that sucks is you. All the bands on the bill are top notch and have paid their dues. Stay away – we dont want negative idiots like you there, and besides, when Korn come on last it’ll be way passed your 8pm curfew reserved for babies and deliquents.

  98. Rory – I see you’re a man of impeccably good taste! I saw MUSE recently in Dubai’s desert rock festival. These guys are on another level as the masses out there will soon discover. Here was their line up (more or less)
    - Knights of Cydonia
    - Hysteria
    - New Born
    - Map of the Problematique
    - Feeling Good
    - Black holes
Matt does his guitar solo (…!)
    - Invincible
    - Butterflies and Hurricanes
    - Starlight
    - Time is Running Out
    - Plug in Baby
    Encore
    - Stockholm Syndrome
    - Take a Bow

  99. Rob, I too have seen Muse, at Wembley stadium last year – it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen! And yes, those who are not familiar with Muse and think that 30STM or Korn are it, are in for quite a surprise.

I really hope they change their setlist a bit though – maybe do Muscle Museum or Showbiz maybe Fury and Citizen Erased.

If you are going, have an awesome time!!

  100. Hell YEAH KORN!!!

    Raymond | Mar 19, 2008 | Reply

  101. Awesome international line up but once again the SA bands are all bands that 94.7 listeners deem to be cutting edge. Come on guys the lead band is Korn we have loads of hard rock bands that would work well with them.. Narrow, Pestroy etc.. Plus we have perfect festival bands like Fuzigish and 1st project that cut across all genre’s and get everyone bouncing (94.7 listeners as well). If you managed to get the local bands right you would be doing the local industry a huge service as the guys who are going to see Korn and happen to see a local band in the same genre might just become a fans. Year on year Coke loses its street cred with the local line up, just get whoever is responsible for the local bands to listen to the campus stations for a couple of months so they can see what is happening musically with their target market – it’s definitely not Prime Circle or Wonderboom.

    Sam | Mar 25, 2008 | Reply

  102. seriously you guys, prime circle is one of the best bands in SA today. I heard some of their new stuff and it’s really really good, just wait for the 3rd album. It rocks.

  103. The Coke Fest was kwl & all but wat da hell was up with the sound & lighting? The short people on the left could not see a thing:( & why didn’t anyone tie the screen down on the right? Please add more food stalls next year..where were the ushers that worked at the toilets last year? Why weren’t there an ATM on the premises, walking to BP sucked? With increased ticket prices, Why no freebies like last year????? KORN’s performance was worth da wait:)

  107. WOW what a hair blow back the whole MCF. I was there for MUSE and they were F**king awesome….

I was sad to see also no ATM’s this year and the toilets were in fair shape last year but the last half of this year they were … well …. phew… words can’t express the FOUL state they remained in.
Big issue with no proper shade covers like last year being a person who ‘cannot’ be in the sun meant I was stucl under BOOZE BAR the whole day! :-) but over all DAMN brilliant.

  108. Cokefest this year was mind blowing Muse and Korn reali showed wat they are about. Golden Circle was the place to be. Think that next year they must do something abt dust factor reali destoryed the atmosphere in CT. Never seen such a huge insane marsh pit than this year. Lets see if you guys can top Korn and Muse.. Linkin Park, Slip Knot and SOAD would be an insane line up for next year. Rumour are of Manson making an appearance so who knows.
Whats up with all these complaints abt music being to loud, it happens once a year ppl please take a chill pill or check yourself.

  113. Guys for 2009 i will vomit if the narrow play, or 16 stitch or any of these “hardrock bands play” They are old and outdated slowly loosing credility. Get some bands that are doing something new, something not so fake and common. If papa Roach play get the narrow etc, if heavy metal bands come get chromium etc. But if good bands come eg incubus, Queens of the stoneage then get local bands like Iberah, the uncut, Korean Rock Squad. no Metal , no metal core no Metal emo core nothing CRAP

    thanx
