Great music…
but the drinks once again was a problem.. 2 hours in the queue for drinks… well done to the organisers… not, missed all the SA acts. As for the adequate ablutions, my arse!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To the organisers, you guys arrange such awesome acts and then piss every one off with your complete lack of planning for the volume of people who arrive… hopefully it will be myPepsi fest 2009

definatly going next year

Jade, did you even go to the toilets? They were disgusting! Drinks easy to get to? LOL! Clearly you didn’t try get drinks yourself then.
Great line up; but even that was spoiled by the lack of preparation and the unnecessarily long switch overs! Took almost an hour for Korn to come on! That’s pathetic… you have a headline band as awesome as Korn, then piss them off by having half the crowd go home as they come on because by that time everyone was just irritated, annoyed and probably tired of waiting!
Oh yeah, and great job on the power tripping LOL! God, that was so embarrassing! 30 Seconds to Mars doing a kick ass job of getting the crowd going and boom! Power trips! Outstanding guys *applaud*

James, at least try to find something enjoyable instead of moaning about everything- it endears you to no one.
I enjoyed most of the line up- Although I must say that I found the Kaiser Chiefs and Chris Cornell a bit dry. Muse and 30 Seconds to Mars, however, was outstanding- Jared Leto walked within about 3 metres of where I was standing! Good Charlotte was also damn good! Yes, Korn did take a bit too long to go home, and I only stayed for the first three songs, as by midnight, I felt it was time to go home. Out of the local bands, I was pleasantly surprised by Wonderboom, whom I’ve heard of and maybe one or two songs, but never full on. They were great! I’m just wondering why it only took about 20 minutes for the local bands to change over, and sometimes up to an hour for the internationals?
I felt that earlier on in the day, the ablution was okay and clean… However, towards the end, I felt they could have been cleaned a bit more, as there was excrement and vomit everywhere. Running out of water was also not on.
I didn’t think the drinks sales were badly done- having salesmen wandering around declaring “Brrrrr” was a nice touch, and enabled easy drinks buying. The food lines, however, were another matter. You could stand in that line for up to an hour, and when I got to the front and asked for a boerewors roll and was told it was all gone, when I could see and smell it cooking in the background, I was not thrilled (although that’s more the individual salesman’s fault).
Right, now as picky as this sounds, it has to be said. Why could we not have designated smoking areas? I realise that I should probably accept the idea that at a rock concert, people are GOING to smoke, but it truly was ridiculous. I had lost my voice by 3 due to all the smoking going on around me, and still have my hair smelling like it. This might fall on deaf ears, but PLEEEAASE can you do something about it next year… It does sort of spoil things for the non-smokers.
I sound like I hated it… I really enjoyed myself; by and large, the atmosphere was amazing, and the bands were awesome! There are just a few minor things that could be improved upon for next year.
Chloe | Mar 22, 2008 | Reply
Sure, the organisers could have done a better job in many ways, but they did bring out all the bands as promised and I would like to see this type of event more frequent. So let’s not diss them and rather give them positive criticism otherwise we might not see an awesome lineup like that again!
Obviously it will take the guys some time to set up in between acts… It’s not an easy job to set up and sound check a few KW of sound to ensure we as the crowd get value for money! As for the bar and toilets… Yes, there is most certainly some work to be done but maybe it was a blessing in disguise drinks took such a long time (1.5 hours for me)… A few people might have died during Korn if the whole crowd was too drunk ;o)
Muse was certainly the best act of the evening in my opinion!!! Something I did not expect at all…
As for Korn, they were also awesome!!! Just a pity I almost broke my angle numerous time with the mud pit and unequal ground.
Thank goodness for the long weekend, I’m certainly going to need some recovery time to recover from sun stroke, tar filled lungs, torn muscles and temporary deafness
)
Have a great weekend and Rock on guys!!!

My Coke 2008 was bitter sweet.
All in all it was a sad day in Rock.
I woke up today remembering how my girlfriend rocked out to 30 Seconds to Mars and absolutely loved it. I remember how mezmerized I was watching the absolute face melting brilliance of Muse.
I also, however, remember at what cost we had those moments.
R1200 for 2 golden circle tickets. Tickets that were sold at a premium, because that’s just the way it is at concerts, I know. I paid that price for one reason though…
“Golden Circle patrons will have access to their own shop areas.”
This would allow me to quickly relinish myself so I could get back to rocking.
DID I MISS SOMETHING!?!
I went to My Coke fest for one reason and one reason only, music. Not for over priced food and drink, or to get pissed with my mates. Yet it would have been nice to get my hands on some replenishment considering I was there for 11 hours. My little green armband was useless in the quaint little food “villages” that were set up far away from the concert area, preventing crowding, and preventing anyone from actually seeing the bands on stage. I also rocked up at one of the Coke refreshment tents at 5:30pm and was greeted by empty fridges and a bunch of kids with enough egg on their face to feed the whole crowd. The picture I took will be posted for sure.
Something else one has to do every now and again in an 11 hour period is use the bathroom. one of the 3(or was it 4) areas provided to serve 46 000 people.
If you were a lady, and used the one in the back, you would have had some nice lights up with 3 police officers standing around to make the experience bareable. If you were a guy, however, you would have had no lights. What we did have was a pool of human urine and feces to walk in. You would also only have realised this once you were in too deep, since it was so dark.
My Coke 2008 cost me the R1200 for the tickets. The R60 for the chip n dip lunch. The R80 Nando’s dinner. The shoes and socks I threw away. Bla bla bla, it’s just money right?
I went to My Coke for music. I got:
A 30 Seconds to Mars show
Half a Good Charlotte show
Chris Cornell
Muse
2 Korn songs
Irritated
Sick
Ill
Frustrated
Grossed out
Pissed off
The fact that we had some fantastic acts on stage should NEVER justify waiting hours for food and drink, or even worse, walking in a pool of human excrement.
Everyone saying it was worth it for the bands that were brought out, should go onto the bands’ respective websites and praise them for coming out. And I intend to do so. As far as praise for Coke and Big Concerts (not to mention the monkeys at 5fm who pretend they all of a sudden like Rock now) goes, I’m afraid there is none.
You’d think they would get it this time, and might have learnt from the previous events, but sadly they didn’t, and expect us to say we loved it because of the bands’ brilliance. Well here goes.
I loved 30 Seconds to Mars, I loved half of Good Charlotte, I loved Chris Cornell, I loved Muse, I loved the 2 Korn songs I saw…
I hated My Coke Fest 2008.

Yes, the (alcoholic) drinks took long. Soft drinks you can pick up at any point in time by just looking around. I never stood in the food rows more than 15 minutes though, and I was there four times, including 21:00.
Yes, the mens urinals situation is completely unacceptable and a complaint should be raised at the applicable health organisations.
BUT. The sound was absolutely amazing. The big screens brilliant. The line-up awesome. That’s what matters at a rock festival.
Apart from the inexcusable disgusting toilets and urinals, nothing wrong at My Coke 2008. It was a ROCK CONCERT, not ballet.
Sorry for all who think it was too expensive, or ripped off by the Golden Circle tickets, or complaining about this and that. I grew up in a time where we would never dream about international acts visiting SA – now, year by year, our dreams are coming true.
I will do it again without blinking an eye. Rock on Coke, rock on Big Concerts, (go hide somewhere 5FM – you don’t know sh*t from rock), and bring on MCF 2009!

Muse/Korn fest-as I expected. Muse was absolutely brilliant(I think they have some devine gift or something) and Korn, well just seeing Jonathan Davis after nearly 11 years of being a fan was worth it. Just one thing, dont understand why every second person there had a korn t-shirt on etc. but when they performed no one knew the songs…if you only know the new albums youre DEFINITELY missing out on a lot! Korn was at their best in the 90s. Though I guess its a personal preference. Its just that every korn fan should at least know their best songs(blind, faget, freak on a leash etc.) 30 seconds were also good, didnt expect that.
Venue was a bit crappy, dont you think? But overall beter concert than previous ones(…maybe thats because of the bands).

Awesome lineup, but that doesnt seem to be the problem for the organisers… After the first DISASTEROUS show with Metalica, one would have thought that the organisers would reapproach the planning board. The toilet facilities were dire to say the least. Dont get me started on the impossible mission to get drinks, approximatetly 1.5 hours to get a drink is rubbish, AND then being told theire sold out BEFORE 9 in the evening… bah!
People get irritated when things arent thought through, I wonder what the artists though of the poor response from an irritated crowd, clearly not the artist’s fault.

The problem with South Africans is, we don’t complain.
If something is not up to standard, we should let our voices be heard. If everyone went on about how great it was, we will be walking around in shit again next year.
Stop being satisfied with sub standards in this country, and maybe someday there will be nothing to complain about.
We shouldn’t say we never deserved the bands and Big Concerts made it possible. WE made it possible, by supporting the bands, and buying the tickets.
The bands were awesome, and it was an absolute pleasure to watch.
But will you go to a restaurant, eat a delicious meal and forgive the cockroach in your scrumptious salad.
You’ll probably eat that cockroach pieter, and that’s sad.
I’m thankful for the bands and thankful for the sponsors and organizers making it possible. Thank
you. But some things are unforgiveable. Promises were made, and weren’t kept.
We’re not asking for our money back, but we do have the right to complain. Did Isabel Jones teach you nothing?
As Matt Bellamy sang so beautifully:
“You and I must fight for our rights…”

DID ANYONE TAKE PICS OF THE BAR – THE 12 PEOPLE DEEP QUEUE??? When we first arrived, we queued for 2 hours odd to get some drinks. When those were finished, we had several attempts at buyong more – after an hour, my friends (as it was their tutn) gave up in the queue as they hadn’t moved.
After Prime Circle we left disgusted at the service once again provided by the organisers. What a shambles and after people had travelled from al lover the country to join us for this event.
What a sham – BIG CONCERTS, 5FM and Coca-Cola – AGAIN!!
When are you going to get it right?

Just like to thank Coke for my Coke fest! I’t was the best organised one yet, I really appreciated coke for their effort in going green and recycling, and the bottles under the tape for saving water! The toilets were the cleanest Ive ever seen in a music event, and I thought the security in golden circle were lovely and really appreciated the water being handed out! Over all the best cokefest yet that I’ve been to and I’m counting down till till cokefest 2009!

Howzit!!!!
Firstly some suggestions:-
- You pay extra for Golden Circle and its the only concert where there are no percs except being closer to the stage>>>you need your own bar and own toilets (like at every other concerts Golden Circle)
-BIGGEST COMPLAINT>>>You should be 18 or older to be in the Golden Circle. Who has time for little high school kids complaining they can’t see, they can’t hold their alcohol and irritate the s@#t out of everyone with their childish antics!!!!!! (who undoes girls bras after turning 15 anyway?)
- Make the venue somewhere we don’t have to walk, sit and stand in Horse Crap all day (Thank God for Newrocks!!)
All in all, toilets were good for a concert venue. Ran out of water to flush and had no lights but there was toilet paper…it wasn’t that bad.
120m of bar…120m OF USELESS!! The bar staff had attitudes from hell like they were doing us a favour, they had favourites they were serving over people in the front of the line heads and no power on some of the draught taps…not to mention NO AMSTEL!!
5fm knows nothing about being Alternative, its a lifestyle not just about the music!! (there was rave at the bar at one stage at a ROCK FESTIVAL…WHAT THE F@#K!!!) If they knew anything about it, the venue for the concert would be alot better, it would a kick ass concert not a s@%t covered kindergarden!
Oh, to the ass wipe that said there should smoking areas>>> Chloe, you gonna ban the smoke machines used on stage? put up glass panels? Control the smoke AT AN OUTDOOR VENUE??? You worried about the smoke smell in your hair but had no complaints about the horse crap everywhere?? Clearly your’re messed up. Comment when you old enough and mature enough!! (you don’t even know who Wonderboom are, never seen them live and only know 1 or 2 songs-dead age giveaway)Don’t you think that people like YOU spoil it for the SMOKERS?? Yes, i said it coz guess what WE HAVE F@#KEN RIGHTS TOO!!!!! Get a life, get an asthma pump and some shampoo!!!
KORN WERE FREAKIN’ AWESOME!! (as expected) They made all the crap worth it! Next time would be nice if more people joined the marsh pit! (oh, little boys that were there – you don’t “push” each other around like fighting school girls>>> you jump into each other, knock each other around with your shoulders and body with a smile on your face! It may be bruised when you done but every sport has its injuries)
For everyone that freaked out and gave Korn the response they deserve – YOU RULE! Go onto YouTube and watch some concert clips from other countries>>>the more quiet the crowd the less lively Korn are!!!
KORN ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (if it wasn’t for them, we would have left way before sundown)
Ruan and Kim | Mar 22, 2008 | Reply
We were really disgusted at having paid R600 for a golden circle ticket only to find out we have to stand in stinking horse shit. That sucked.(is it too much to ask them to clean the place up before a show?) So we walked all the way round to the other side which was a bit better. The golden circle definitely needs its own bar/shop. we had to walk far to go and get something to drink, and then be told they don’t have glasses/cups for us.so we had to finish our drinks before going back to the GC, and then stood for three hours to keep our places for Korn, and dying of thirst. Some people were feeling really ill and couldn’t even sit down because of the mud. i think this really spoilt the show for a lot of fans.
30 seconds to Mars was absolutely awesome! Jared really interacted with the crowd and was fantastic. But what happened to the band signing cds and such! After searching for about an hour for the place where they were signing, they (the organisers) finally made an announcement on stage that there would be no signing! you suck!
It was an extremely long wait for Korn.
We suffered through Chris Cornell and Good Charlotte. What irritated especially was the teeny boppers all pushing in and trying to get to the front, no matter who they stepped on or shoved to get their way in. We all paid the same money for it!
We decide that to see Korn we’d go stand in the mud and shit for them- hell we’ve waited all these years for them.
So Korn was finally onstage, loved them loved them loved them! their show was over way to quickly and no chance to meet the band or get backstage passes or signatures, which we would willingly have stood in line for.
Afterwards we did the long trek to the car through the mud and rubbish, only to find out we could not get the car out because of the long queues in the road. We had to wait exactly an hour and a half before we could get out of the racecourse.WTF!!!!!
you’re tired and cold and drove f*cking far to come to the show and now you can’t even go home. That was really poor planning on behalf of the organisers.
We hope they do a better job next year, we loved the bands, and the atmosphere.Fans are willing to pay a lot of money to see the bands – please just plan it better!

Wow! What an unbelievable event! On a spontaneous whim I decided to buy tickets the day before the concert, purely to see 30 Seconds to Mars and Muse LIVE. On arrival I expected to have to wait in long queues to get in…nope, it was quick and efficient. The same with the queue for the ladies toilets. However, the same cannot be said for the bar. When I eventually decided that I would like an alcoholic beverage, I had to wade through mud to stand in the queue. As the queue progressed so did the mud…all the way over my shoes and up my pants. Now I have no problem what so ever with dirt, but when I pay R400 for a ticket, I expect a certain standard to be upheld, and I expect to be able to get something to drink when I’m tired of soft drinks and water! Just a suggestion, plastic sheeting on the ground around the bar area would have worked, so would sawdust…just a thought for next year.
The bands were awesome. Hated Kaiser Chiefs, they were like an annoying teenager that whines in your ear non stop and in my opinion they should have played before 30 Seconds to Mars (or not at all), who would have been brilliant before Chris Cornell, but who nonetheless were absolutely outstanding, even with the most embarrassing power failure in the middle of their set! Completely ridiculous and one has to ask who we have to thank for that? Eskom (no doubt) or was their some other explanation (doubtful).
Chris Cornell was amazing and Muse was mind blowing! Truly a most talented group and one of the best live performances I have ever seen! Korn was also brilliant, although a little on the heavy side for me, but enjoyed it equally.
Out of the South African line up, I really enjoyed all of them, none of the acts were spectacular but they definately show cased some of our extraordinary talent here in South Africa.
The 5FM dj’s were a bit useless, and I think the MC’s at a rock concert should at least be a little interested and involved with rock music if they are going to be MCing a ROCK concert?! Inane babbling about crap on stage in between acts just pisses everyone off. Also take a look at the music fillers in between acts, a little variation would have been nice, Evanescence is only nice for so long, then it gets too much. Oh, and to the organisers, big up on the idea of recycling the waste from a rock concert, there is usually a revoltingly large amount. However, bins placed in only a few areas are useless. No one is going to trek to find a bin, the ground is much easier and that became incredibly apparent as the night wore on. The ground was eventually one big trash can, something which could have been prevented to a large extent, had dustbins been spread around the concert venue.
So, although the power failure brought immense amounts of shame, the bar was terrible, the toilets by the end of the evening were gross to say the least, the ground turned into a trash can, the food was overpriced and the MC’s were crap, I had an absolutely AMAZING day! The bands and their performances definatley over shadowed the (for want of a better word) ‘disappointments’ of the day. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I would pay the money all over again, and yes, even put up with the shit to be able to see such amazingly talented performers again! Thanx to Coke, Big Concerts & 5FM for bringing out some spectacular acts, and although the organisation is still lagging behind, I wait in antic-i-pation for the line up for next year’s Coke Fest to be released. What a great day out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Righto, Ruan (the illiterate foul-mouthed clown who tried to slate me a few lines up). I suppose you count yourself to be one of those who fits the description? There is more maturity in my little finger than there is in your entire body. Comments pages are for opinions and suggestions (although I think that concept might be a tad out of reach for you). I expressed mine, as I am allowed to do so, as did you, and personal attacks are not called for. So I’ll try and bring my vocab for my parting words to you down to a level that you can comprehend… f*#k off and leave me alone.

Wow, I never expected so many complaints about something I’ve never looked more forward to in my life. (CT event)
I do believe in balance, enjoyment of the event and also positive critique. I also sincerely believe that South Africans really love to swallow crap service and come begging for more.
The fact that the general vibe on this comments page is negative is indicative that things were not done properly. I hope the role players take note, but have my doubts, next year will prove it.
My only hope is that the amazing line up of overseas bands will outweigh the (expectedly, but hopefully not shoddy) service delivered by BIG Concerts.
Watch this sp ace for a follow up.
PS Ruan and Kim, learn to spell and boy, with anger projection like yours, I’m glad I’m going to the Cape Town event. I wish you peace.

Complaints make sure people do what they promise next time round. Read on this site under “common Questions” On 5fm’s site under “What you can do at My Coke Fest” and “My Coke Fest did you know?” Promises were made and not upheld. That’s the issue…people had expectations and they weren’t met. plus, I read on a site that the organisers CUT KORN’S SETLIST AND MADE THEIR SHOW SHORTER (about 5 or 6 songs) BECAUSE OF TIME RESTRICTIONS??!!! WTF?? 30 seconds to Mars was voted Best of 2007 by Fuse (they even beat out Korn shockingly by 200 000 votes)and they were put at the bottom of the international Line-Up? I give them Props for arranging the bands we got to see the show itself was not a letdown!! We paid for a show that was promoted a certain way, if it was free i wouldn’t complain. But we all spent our hard earned cash and were promised things that did not exsist. Go look up and you’ll get it. Golden circle was a waste. Really was done as an after thought. People at the back could at least enjoy their drinks from bottles ( plastic ). Were closer to all drink and food stalls. Didnt have the mud. Could sit on chairs. All we got for R1200 was closer view. Very disappointed. Line up was awesome though.

I’m with Carol on this one. No complaints!
One of the best shows I’ve ever been to!
I dunno what loos evereyone else used, but the ones by the medic tent looked fine to me.
Just a bit of constructive criticism… sorting out the mud/horse poo problem in golden circle would have helped. but as far as I’m concerned, a bit of dirt on my shoes and discadring a hoodie that got trampled in the stuff was a teeny tiny sacrafice I was willing to make for such an awesome day!!
Oh, and student discounts for golden circle would have been nice

Hey Mike. You are allowed to take a camera. They only stop you from taking a camera with a huge lens. Like no semi professional cameras. Otherwise just put it right at the bottom of a bag underneath something, they dont check right to the bottom. And make sure you DONT take any sweets or stuff in. They chuck it out!! Enjoy it. It is totally amazing!!

My husband and I took our teenage boy and his girlfriend to the MCF, but we really went there for ourselves as we are huge fans of Chris Cornell, Muse and Korn. Compared to the rest of the audience, we are old but I can’t bring myself to complain like all you young people. You sound like a bunch of oldies! I am still coming to grips with the fact that I actually saw with my own eyes, these bands performing. How awesome! I was a little irritated at the lukewarm response Chris Cornell got from the audience. Some dude next to me asked who he was anyway! What! He was looking at a legend and didn’t even know it.
Waiting for korn to come on was quite painful because by that time I had backpain, I was cold and tired and longed for a warm bed, but I didn’t care.
The whole experience was awesome, I would do it all over again! (after some physiotherapy)

Odette, you are on the ball! Most of these people do sound like a bunch of oldies. I knew one of my friends was onto something when she said that South African people love to complain, and this is a fine example. Come on people, stop acting like a bunch of spoilt brats! This was such a kickass event and I hope that there will be more to come in the future!
I think paying R600 for 6 international bands was more than good value for money. Just think about it, that’s R100 per band, you just cant get better than that! Nowadays you pay sometimes even double that amount just to see one international act.
I just want to say well done to the organisers for getting all these bands here, and for putting together such an amazing event. ROCK ON!

I live in Kenilworth near the source of awful noise. Your music is so loud in our area, a huge noise. Absolutely no consideration for residents of the area. I dont mind if anybody wants to blow there heads off with that music, but we did NOT ask for it nor deserve to hear that awafull noise,. that rattles our windows. What should have been the last day of a peaceful long weekend is now destroyed. Please stop beinfg so rude \nd selfish.

You guys are asking for pictures/videos??? I thought ALL RECORDING EQUIPMENT was BANNED from the show??? Not contradicting at all! I really wanted to take photos of Metallica a few years back when they came, but we weren’t allowed to. I havent to this day seen anything from that show. I’ll never be able to watch it and think back of what a good show Metallica was. It’s because of the lack of planning and organizing that I haven’t returned to a Coke fest since Metallica. R600 for 12 hours of standing to watch 1 band. Never again will I do that. And the food was off, the water made us all sick, and there were filth in the toilets. Queues were too long to bother standing in them and the sound was so loud, it distorted in our ears. If Korn and Muse came and there was only a 4 hour show, I’d definitely go.But to watch crappy SA bands try to perform really just gave us all a headache.
There were tv cameras at My Coke Fest when Metallica played. Why isn’t the footage available as a DVD or something you could buy? What were those cameras for if not to record the show and to sell the material to consumers? If I’m not allowed to take my camera in, I will never go at Coke fest again.
What an image we portray to international artists…

How dare you spoil the easter weekend for anyone living within a 6km radius of the Kenilworth race course with deafening ‘music’! I will not buy another of your products again.
Please don’t tell me that the so-called festival brought money into the city – the city relies on the rates paid by the residents and I am quite sure that none of those living anywhere nearby enjoyed having their eardrums battered.

Louis, you had months warning. Go out, go away for the day, visit family or friends, buy some ear plugs etc etc etc. Besides, does anyone that wants peace and quiet go live next to a Race Course??
Once upon a time, a wise man said: “IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOUR’RE TOO OLD.”
You expect consideration but why don’t you consider this:-
We have all waited years for them to bring some decent international alternative bands out to this country!!!! So, who is the selfish one??
Personaly I would’ve liked the sound to be 10x louder than what it was, but I guess they made some compensation for people like you… Sorry if we made a noise, that wasn’t our intention>>>we meant to make ONE HELL OF A RACKET!!!! We will definatley rectify that next year.

I live over 3km from Kenilworth Racecourse
My windows are shaking and I cannot hear myself think (as they say)
This is shocking. To those who say we have had warning, no one on earth would expect to hear this noise as far a way as Newlands. The main issue is that its a monday night, we all have work tomorrow and the people affected by this are far more than those rather unpleasant sounding individuals (based on some comments above)that go.
Maybe those that think we are wrong to complain about the noise will agree next time to booking several thousand hotel rooms for us locals, so that they can enjoy themselves in our suburbs, I’m sure we will all be happy then.

As far as the complaints regarding the music, my folks live within a km of the racecourse and they are both in their late 60’s and are both working today…and not a moan or complaint about the noise. Why? So for 1 day in the year their kids can have an absolutely awesome time!!!

First off, the My Coke Fest was brilliant. The bands
kicked some serious ass!
We never bought anything after the SA bands were finished and stood in the crowd to keep our place.
My feet was killing me, but it was well worth it having a front row (behind the golden circle) “seat” when KoRn came on.
I have had a few issues though. At the entrance our
snacks for the day was taken as it was not allowed inside. The funny thing, my friend bought a Coke standing in line and that wasn’t even allowed in!
5m from the entrance you can buy Coke again…How ridiculous is that?!
Next year I’ll definitely get myself a golden circle ticket!

well, i had a blast, got the sunstroke and sore body to prove it, Muse was simply amazing and it was great to see a legend like chris cornell perform, shame on any rocker who doesn’t know who he is.
as far as organization was concerned, aside from the confusion about cameras, i thought it was pretty well planned, the shuttles to and from the parking was quick and organized, my longest wait was 10 minutes for the loo, even though most of the queues were long at times, they moved pretty quickly, one thing i would have liked to see though was more shade closer to the stage, but all said and done, a great day out!

I thought the JHB event was incredible, though like most have my gripes about the service offerings.
There was plenty of bar space and bar staff but it was just poorly managed. I went to a concert in Dublin with a bar a 1/4 of the size of Coke Fest. But clear in and out queues separated by steel bars together with rounded drink prices made for fast moving queues and happy customers.
I think the same concept would make the world of difference in SA. Maybe the event organizers could hit an overseas concert to see how they do it???
Was also a bit pissed off that all my R600 got me was a mud pit closer to the stage. Though looking at how far the general tickets were maybe it was worth it!

come on guys I though after doing this for the 3rd time there would be less stuffups not more! To have to wait almost 2hrs for a drink (SAB not very well done at all) then to get served by drunk barmen who could only pour one beer at a time, they couldnt calculate either!! Can no believe the state of the loos – is your budget so bad that you only have half the amount of cleaners if that! Last year golden circle had vouchers for food and drinks – what happened this year??? And to pay R600 for golden circle and you cant organise enough vendors to walk around selling drinks to cater for the masses, we had to q up with the rest. Bands could have been enjoyed if we werent spending our time waiting for drinks, water, food and the loos. The toilets again..get your act sorted it is actually a health risk! Look to international concerts and show, see the amount they have, look and learn coz if they can do it so can we..
PS – get it sorted for 2009 if you have the chance

Well , sounds like we in the Cape had a better experience than the Josi people – the grounds were good ( a bit dusty but thats it ) , toilets got a bit bad later on , the changeovers between bands was good ( averaging 25- 30 min ) . The show finished at about 11 here in Cape town . The wind was probably the worst factor as it messes the sound up a bit .But the organisers cant do much about that !
As for the bands – Good Charlote were horrible ! I enjoy their latest album , but they sounded very poor live – the mixing was really bad .
Chris Cornell was my favourite , playing solid rock tunes and some great oldies like Rusty Cage , Outshined and , I am so happy , he played hunger Strike !! He showed his experience . I also thought that Prime Circle were fantastic ! Gee , but what a difference a great sound rig makes to a band whose songs are usually a bit low key . Just goes to show what could happen if they had access to stater of the art mixing studios as the Americans do .
30 Seconds were ok , Jared Leto is an ecxellent perfomer and does a great job interacting with the crowd .
Muse were very tight but lacked crowd engagement . I am amazed at how many people ‘pretend’ they like them , sitting on the shoulders of their boyfriends , yet cant sing one word to a song .
Korn were very energetic , but again I feel the mixing was not good enough
Kaiser Chiefs were a blast – great guitat tones and excellent performance , really enjoyed them .
All in all a great day and really look forward to next year ….who wwe gonna see ….Pearl jam ( PLEEEEZE) , Three Days Grace , Placebo , Killers , Chevelle …..

Was at the Cape Town festival and only have 2 gripes – firstly that the Golden circle was too big for the amount of people who had tickets. I was right up against the golden circle fence and there were meters of space between me and the golden circle crowd – which totally stuffed up the atmosphere! Secondly there were not enough food places. Toilets and drink queues were reasonable but getting food was almost impossible. Overall however I had an awesome time and the organisation was pretty good compared to the UK festivals I have been to. Muse were frikken amazing and I look forward to more good bands next year!

Hey guys.
I went to the JHB show on Friday. The bands were brill. Really enjoyed 30 Sec to Mars, Korn and Muse. SA bands were ok but Wonderboom was the best.
As for the planning…. Where does one start???
Why did they feel that only having one store for Merchandise would be ok for 47 000 people. We stood in the que for ages. Last year there were 2 stores. Good thinking!
But cleaver idea on the selling of gumboots. I dont know how many bright people I saw in heals, who ended up buying. Must have been their first time at any kind of festival.
As for the bar, Not cleaver. To stand for at least a hour in the mud for drinks is just not on. Last year there was still guys walking around with beer not just coke. Soft drinks were easy to get a hold of unless you were in Golden Circle. We were standing just behind a walk way and during the whole day only 2 coke guys walked by.
We had no problem with food. Except for ordering and paying for cheese burgers for Nandos but got no cheese.
The loos, I’ve been to enough festivals to know that after the sun goes down dont go any where near the loo, just hold it….
Our main complaint was the parking. Someones money making scam, to sell parking tickets for R40. We apparently got there a little to late as we had to park (in the grounds), but down the left of the main entrance of the grounds. We parked on the grass, I guess its the area where they park the horse trailers. Getting out was not a nice story. We moved off the grass and into a cue of cars heading towards the gate but our cue was stopped by road marshals and thats where we stayed for almost 2 hours. Im sure you can guess how happy I was, 2 hours desperately needing to go….. It took us 2 and a half hours to drive the 30kms back to Fourways.
Coke fest seem to be well orginised ever second year. Come on guys its not rocket science.

This year’s the Coke Fest was awesome!!! Although we all have our little concerns and complaints, there seems to be a real possibility that this may not be happening again. GASP!!!!
Although Cape Town is considered as probably one of the most laid back of places, it seems that not everyone is. It seems that since last night’s super awesome gig, there have been a number of complaints from the public regarding noise coming from the venue as far as Althone and Rondebosch. The complaints have been rolling in all morning and have already almost doubled compared to those received from residents last year, although the concert ended earlier and was so much softer then the previous one.
Taking into account the volume of complaints made and received, remember these aren’t even the ones that have been put into the papers yet, it seems that there may be a strong possibility that the City of Cape Town and/or its residents, may not allow another event like this to take place in our fair city. This is a very real concern as this then means that seeing international and local bands on this scale will cease to be. Considering that there aren’t many venues of this scale and capacity.
In a pre-emptive strike, I urge all fans to please write in to your local newspapers, on your blogs and even on any groups relating to the Coke Fest your positive experiences and feelings about such gigs and how positive it really is hosting something like this in our country and even City.
This is not a joke I assure you. I am a fan, just like you and I live for this. Please don’t let them take it away from us.

Three words – Best.Show.Ever!
After reading the comments from the JHB guys I admit I was not expecting much from the CT show but hats off to 5fm, Big Concerts and Coke for an awesome day! Granted, food queues did get a bit hectic as the sun went down but all in all I have no complaints.
I’m not a Good Charlotte fan but they definately rocked the crowd in CT yesterday. Chris Cornell still kicks ass and I’m proud to say the CT crowd gave him some decent support – at least in the section I was in.
30 Seconds to Mars and Jared Leto definately know how to interact with their audience and man oh man was Korn awesome or what?! The experience they’ve gained from being on the scene for the past 12-13 years really showed. I hope they go on for many more!
I would gladly pay to see the same line up next year even though I was lucky enough to get my tickets for free this year – thx to my wife

Well done on organising a great event in Cape Town. People who complain about everything should really get a life. You go to a concert to see the bands, not to have 5star service, rather stay at home and watch the dvd then! My coke fest 2008 was great!!
I only went to see Muse (my favourite band) and they were amazing, just like I expected. I also really enjoyed Kaiser Chiefs. My only complaint is that the big screen was not on with kaiser chiefs, so the people at the back could not see anything. People don’t cheer when they can’t see. Luckily I had golden circle tickets. There were one guy that when Muse were playing, keep shouting “bring on korn!!” I wish I smacked him. Have some damn class you stupid idiot. Everyone paid to see their favourite band. Muse were by far the greatest performance of the day and evening. As for the S.A bands, Wonderboom was really great. For next year, bring System of a Down!

I think the best way to compare with other festivels would be to look at New Zealand who just this last weekend had the Rock2Wellington. Check out their views on the likes of Kiss, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osborne, Poison, Whitesnake and Lordi.
People there do not seem to complain so much about everything. Come on guys must we whinge all the time?

Hey Guys
Thanks for the cool bands their performance was excellent,
But planning really sucked!!!
Yes we understand that you had a lot of rain to deal with…
But that’s no excuse.
We as Gold circle people paid R600 rand to see the bands and
Other non Gold circle members paid the security R50 to get into Golden Circle,
How do you explain that?
I am available if you need someone to help do the next my coke fest planning.

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Coke~Cola, 5fm, Big Concerts and EVERYONE involved with bringing us this amazing concert. You guys ROCK! I had such an awesome time, despite the mud. I have posted all my pics on facebooks “I rocked at Cokefest”. All the bands were just friggin’ fantastic, our SA bands are right up there with the international acts. I cannot wait for next year.

As my first time at a cokefest I was very impressed by the smooth running at the Capetown show. (Especially after hearing about the chaos at the recent Celine Dion gig).
The parking and shuttles were excellent. The ablution and food&drink stalls were good. Golden circle access appeared to be well controlled and there was enough space. The sunscreen people were very helpful.
Two suggestions: 1) some place to wash your grimy hands before enjoying your food would be good. I hear that there were people you could go to, but it would be good to have such basic hygiene facilities more visible and close to the toilets.
2) Better garbage pickup. I was initially impressed with the people going around and constantly picking up empty plastic cups etc, but this apparently stopped once the international bands started.
Muse was AMAZING! Big thanks to the organisers and the bands!
Please get us radiohead next year! (since more than 1300 people want to see them in SA: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2328857760)

thank you thank you thank you. i flew up from durban on friday morning for the show and was blown away. i never thought that in my lifetime i’d see korn in south africa – never mind muse or chris cornell. WELL DONE. an unbelievable line-up, amazing sound, well executed – granted the toilets, the mud, the booze, the queue to leave – but it was a festival. i’d do it all again for that line-up.
one request please: next time, can we have the DEFTONES?
THANK YOU!

Coke Fest ROCKED!
I almost broke my back jumping up and down on 30 Seconds to Mars and Muse! All and all ‘n really rocking time!
DEAR MONJA!
I am guessing that you’re a pig, seeing that you didn’t mind the “mud” (horse shit) that covered golden circle. The main thing people complain about is the fact that golden circle was promised their own shopping area and loo’s. Honestly I think you are over reacting calling the people who moan about the loo’s spoilt! Although it sounds like a little hygiene is something completely new to you, I understand that you kak everybody out about complaining about the sub-standard toilet facilities!
My boyfriends had to chuck away his shoes and socks and soak his feet in detol for an hour because when he went to the loo his feet were emerged in urine and vomit… but once again, being a pig you wouldn’t mind that!
Also, I have been to oppikoppi 3 times and you can not compare the 2 events, oppikoppi has better toilets (if you actually use them and not pee in the bushes which you probably do piggy) and you don’t sit in horse shit. I have never stood in a queue for 2 hours at koppi and never waited for booze!
I absolutely loved the line up and I had LOADS of fun, don’t get me wrong! I’m looking forward to going again next year, but as an event manager myself I just feel that this event lacked in some aspects of organization.
a few suggestions:
Please make golden circle a no under 18 zone! The kiddies are super irritating!
Please allow us to take bottles into Golden Circle, as you have no place to put your glass and you jump allot!
Please bring out a DVD of the show, it is absolutely worth remembering despite all the complaints about the horse shit everywhere!
Please make Golden Circle worth our money!
Thank you to all the bands who took the time to visit our country! YOU GUYS ROCKED!

the only piggy here is you my dahling if you so wish to call me one
the only reference i am making to oppikoppie is that you are in the dirt for about 4 to 5 days and the toilets are NOT that great!!! you sleep on rock hard ground and excuse me but its NOT like you can keep urself clean in red dirt the whole time.
i had nothing to say about the guys urinals too my dear go have a read, the girls did not have the same trouble so how the hell should i even know about the guys’? i dont comment on stuff i dont know about!
my personal hygiene is none of ur concern, but yes, i did not mind standing in the mud/horse crap for a few hours to c my fave band!
relax and go buy ur bf new shoes, mine are clean again – ever heard of handy andy and domestos?
hope to c u at oppikoppie though maybe we could go have a drink and chat about our common interests such as great music, even greater festivals and such

I wish I could stay online all day and read the comments, but alas, I can’t. My personal experience was that it was THE best concert I’ve ever attended. Unfortunately, nothing will ever be perfect. My issues as follows:
1. Arriving with my alotted 1 litre of water and being told by the security at the gate that I wasn’t allowed in (after it being stated differently on the website that it was). Only after a long argument and being made to feel like a naught school kid, was I allowed to take it in. ORganisers: please arrange for proper briefs to be given to all who work at the door. Water should eb allowed in, no matter what – there are people who are diabetic that need to drink water.
2. I also agree that having paid for a golder circle ticket, there should have been a few bars and toilets for their exclusive use. Though I do understand it being a bit of a logistical issue to do so but its easy enough to make a plan. Have a queue only serving people with the arm bands they paid for. Or alternatively, have guys with backpacks going aruond sellign beer – like they have done before at concerts at the Dome. This would have made a HUGE difference
3. A bit of light in the toilets would’ve been nice. There are porta-loos available for hire that have a solar panel for light. Or at least some spotlights shining ove the loo areas since the porta-loos did have a lighter roof that wouldn’t allowed the light in.
4. With regards to the Green initiative: Great idea however hopelessly implemented. The bins were right at the back to the side of the bars. Unfortunately, people needed them closer. In the GC for instance, they should’ve lined the fences as well as at the entrances. Furthermore, if you are going to give people plastic cups every time they buy from the bar, then there is going to be a HUGE waste of cups. Rather do like what they do at the cricket – charge the patrons a rand or two per cup they take. This will encourage people to bring their cups back and recycle them.
5. The SA bands that played were all, with the exception of Wonderboom (and I’m not a fan of theirs at all) and Prime Circle – more than substandard. What about bands like the Nude Girls (who not so long ago did a gig together), Arno Carstens even? FokofPolisieKar, Battery9, Voodoo Child … Lonehill Estate started off with a brilliant track and it was all downhill from there. Crash Car Burn were horrible too. We havesome great SA bands out there and I feel that we didn’t showcase ones that deserve to be showcased.
Those are about all the issues I had. Though I must agree with someone who earlier mentioned the number of drunken, disorderly teens and pre-teens that were wondering around. It was disgusting to see and i saw more than a few that were passed out drunk by 13:00. From what I saw, the security at the bar was dismal – ID’s were not being checked properly. And with regards to the mud: Well, I think most people will remember that it did rain pretty solidly for most of the week before the concert. We can be THANKFUL that it didn’t rain the day before, or else the mud would’ve been something else!!
My compliments to the organisers on the following:
1. The entry into the actual concert are was quick and easy
2. The rock angels and dogs were great with their sunblock etc
3. The toilet ladies (and I made use of two seperate areas) were INCREDIBLE! I found the loos to be immaculate each time I went – including the last time which was just after Chris Cornell.
4. The food and variety of food was incredible. Big WELL DONE to Nando’s who were churning out the food even up to before Korn came on. It was cold, but it was good and well put together
5. The Coke/Water/Power vendors walking around were fabulous
6. The cleaner guys that came in and picked up trash during the breaks in the concert were great. They had a huge task – might be a good idea to have more of them and to have them working a bit later into the night
7. The sound and the stage set up was incredible. I could feel the music move through my entire body! The set up between each band was good cause I had enough time to pee and get back. Though the last wait was a bit too long.
8. The line-up was INCREDIBLE! Chris Cornell is a rock GOD. The MUSE – most definately the best LIVE act I have ever seen in my life and would LOVE to see them again on their own. KoRn – POWER!!!!!
Anyway, in conclusion: I think it was a great day, I (and everyone we know) had a complete kick-ass day. If I might be so bold as to suggest to Coke and Big Concerts: Red Hot Chilli Peppers, System of a Down. Foo Fighters. Marilyn Manson. The Muse (AGAIN). NIN. Audioslave. Deftones. Rammstein. Linkin Park. So many bands we’d love to see….

After all the moaning about camera’s, I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed one and nobody stopped me from taking it in…
Nevertheless, IT WAS STOLEN with all my pic’s on it.
Can anyone tell me if there is a “LOST AND FOUND” from the Jhb concert and how to get hold of them, with the smallest glimmer that I may get it back somehow (there are still some decent people out there… I just know it!)
Other than that, it ROCKED!!! Thank you!

2) Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Oh my goodness, I can’t believe the complaints from the residents near Kenilworth. Get over yourselves, the concert didn’t even go past 12! One bloody night, you couldn’t have made a plan? Why don’t you just complain about events like the argus which inconveniance just about all major traffic for a day? Too high brow compared to a rock concert? Everyone gets a turn, you can go to grumpy people conventions if you so desire but we rock fans wait patiently for one day a year. You are the ones being selfish. I’ll never be one of you people, if I live near a live concert venue, I’ll enjoy it! Loved the comment from the Carrie, the 30-something.
To the civilised complaint from the other mother, I’m sorry to tell you that the loudest act will always play last at a rock concert because they are the headliners.
Otherwise what more can I say? I really don’t care about the food lines or toilets since I usually plan to keep my place. Yeah I was in a longish food line but it didn’t bother me. It was very dusty in GC, lol.
Cokefest was perfect, a dream come true, all the boys from 30stm signed my wristband, talked to me and Jared even put it on my wrist! Then Muse after that? Can you say dead and in heaven?

Hey .. had to add my two cents worth…
Concert was without a doubt, awesome. I did enjoy the first one with Metallica more (That’s because of Fatboy Slim though!!) But this one was awesome. Muse were amazing and Chris Cornell sand “Black Hole Sun” .. I don’t think anybody realises how lucky they are to hear one of the GREATEST rock songs ever made performed live! Korn, I heard, was good, but I left after 5 or 6 songs .. to beat traffic which, I think was a very good call especially after reading the stories here! Wonderboom were amazing btw and the way the crowd reacted shows that our SA artists are just as good as the international bands. BTW, I think the power cut was the organisers fault – Eskom had NO load shedding this weekend…though they are shouldering the blame here!!
Now for the negatives, most of which has been documented:
- Parking. Pathetic. I spoke to the guards and he said there was ONE exit for a couple thousand cars. Moreover, this was an exit that fed onto a main road. R50 was a ripoff to pay – people who parked outside had the same amount of security as inside and probably paid R2 for that! This was definitely just pure money making. Rating 2/10
- Toilets. Satisfactory. 46 000 people at a concert and maybe around 200 toilets. That just doesn’t work. Then again, you couldn’t get a drink so you didn’t have to go
Sarcasm aside, there was no water as promised in the promotional ads. The hygiene levels also dropped drastically and that really is unacceptable. I’m sure there are laws prohibiting toilets getting that bad. 4/10
- Food and Drink. One thing I did not appreciate was the Coke pricing – its the COKEFEST – my gosh, R9 for a Coke. Um, nope. Also, the vendors didn’t give you change when you gave them a R10. Yes, this is nitpicking but its not fair trade and basically the vendors could be taken to court for that. Also, I won’t even go into the queues for drinks. My suggestion, bring in Vodka in a water bottle. Cheaper and you don’t have to queue
I didn’t buy any food though I did queue for half an hour. I’m dumbfounded as to how within a single year, things changed so much. Buying booze and food last year was a pleasure. Also, although I wasn’t golden circle, these guys should have had a separate bar. It would have alleviated a lot of stress placed on the bar that was there. Golden Circle meant nothing – rather buy the cheap ticket and bribe a guard with R50 to get into Golden Circle. 1/10
- Merchandise. The queues were longer than the drinks lines. Why only two stalls? 3/10
- The Field. Why couldn’t the organisers clean up at least a little before we got there? The tickets were presold and, assuming 46 000 R400 tickets were sold, thats R18 million rand. Um, I think some of that could have been used for cleaning up AND providing more bins seeing that most trash ended up on the floor because bins were nowhere to be found. 5/10
My suggestions:
Get Oppikoppi or Splashy Fen organisers to help Big Concerts next year with these simple logistical things. They know festivals whereas Big Concerts (BC) don’t know them. The promotion by BC was excellent but the nitty gritty, not so much.
It might sound that I didn’t enjoy the concert – on the contrary, I did. The chill areas were a brilliant idea and the big screens were amazing. So was the sound. The organisers can be applauded for that. The thing is that I think even the organisers know that the event could be planned MUCH better and now that SA is getting big concerts, we should demand the quality of the overall experience matches what we get on stage. It’s quite simple. I hope the organisers consider some of the complaints here rather than being greedy, money-hungry people that don’t care.
Anyway, lastly – my wishlist for next year:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Incubus
Arctic Monkeys (though how to fit a band like that in is difficult)
Pearl Jam
Oasis

Ja I agree with you guys about the fact that Saffa’s are often keen to moan and be negative, BUT I also agree with a comment made earlier that things don’t improve without criticism. If we all just accept the lot given to us things do not change. Change is good. It’s what makes things work better and it enriches life. So I reckon a balance is the way to go. We must be able to let go and just rock out and get dirty and stuff and have a jol (stop moaning negative people), but we should also not jump on somebody’s back as soon as he/she gets critical
I wish I could go back in time and do yesterday again, it was sooooo sweet. Well done Coke okes!

The last thing you want to be is a pushover, and sure if you’re given the wrong end of the stick, you definitely should stand up for yourselves…
BUT… there’s a difference between trying to improve things (through constructive criticism) and merely bitching and moaning for the sake of it.

MCF in Cape Town was awsome!!! Everything was well organised, from lunch to drinks to getting your hands ‘washed’ at the toilets! Even the security did a great job at kicking a drunk, annoying guy who made a complete ass of himself out!!
30 seconds to Mars, Good Charlotte, Kaiser Chiefs and Muse kicked ass on stage! Only regret I have is not getting a golden circle ticket sooner! Im definately going again 2009!!!
Well done to the bands and everyone who put the show together! We had such a great time!!

Seems like Cape Town kicked ars…AGAIN!!! I broused through the Jo’burg comments the night before the Kenilworth show and was expecting chaos at MCF. What a pleasant surprise. Everything was well organised and planned. We might have learned from the Jo’burg f@#&-ups, but I get the feeling that Capies just knows how to have a good time.
Just one slightly negative comment… If you don,t have the balls to marsh right in the pit,at the front of the Golden cirle, where you’ll be ruffed up by true ROCKERS,don’t marsh! Not everyone listening to Muse and Korn wants to be rammed to the ground by some pretencious, drunk and selfish wanna-be. Grow up children!
PRIME CIRCLE, 30 SECONDS (WOW!), GOOD CHARLOTTE, MUSE (WOW!), KORN…worth every cent and more.

Awesome day in Jozi! I went for 30 Seconds and they were FANTASTIC but I was a bit pissed off they played so early – night time seems to bring out the best in the crowd and I felt that Jared Leto’s boys were a bit “under-appreciated”. Muse was awesome and I was nicely suprised by Good Charlotte. But guys, C’mon, R38 for a small margarita pizza? That’s not on, especially when the majority of the guys there are students who forked out their life savings for the ticket alone! That needs to be addressed but other than that congrats on an awesome event that was really only soured by Eskom – but what do u expect? See u next year!

I just wanna know what went through the minds of the technical guys when they decided not to properly strap the speakers so that it wouldn’t swing sideways. Ever heard of phasing? Also, c’mon guys, line array might be the way of the future, but it’s not working in an outdoor event. The PA sucked. Big time. What’s up with 2 video screens on one side? Why did the one on the left fall? Gearhouse is supposed to be the best & biggest sound company in S.A. U guys did a crap job. Last year’s organizing was a million times better.
All my life I’ve been a rock/metal fan, but these days every band plays with back/click tracks (except chris cornell) Did anyone notice that there was piano in one of Muse’s songs and no-one was playing it on stage? Music is soooo not what it used to be!
Man I’m glad I got comps, because this would have been a huge waste of money.

I’ve been to a few music events and festivals in the UK and I must say, apart from the poor bar service, this was an awesome day. Definately going next year, but will not pay for Golden Circle, its not worth it.

All you people who complain all the time piss me off! You all got one kick ass rock festival and now you complain about bars being over crowded and toilets being dirty.
With 40000 odd people at a show, bars will be full and toilets will be a bit dodge. What the f*** are you people on about? Its a rock show and not a balet concert.
All you wussies who complain shouldnt go to something like Coke Fest, instead go to a rave club or some DJ playing some kak music because its quite obvious that you guys dont fit in and dont belong at a rock festival.
Great job to Coke and all the organisers, Ive been at all 3 Coke fests and will go next year again no matter what. Thanks for bringing top class international bands to South Africa. Really awesome.

My coke fest 2008 has left me with a very sour taste in my mouth… It surprises me that people that do events management as a career can still organize something like that and have a job to go to…
Comments were made like, “It’s only money”… Well, money makes the world go round and if it has no value to them, they can buy me my ticket!!! For R400 entrance, I don’t expect to stand in a line for 2 hours to get a beer at ridiculous price and miss what I paid to see!!! Food prices and lines were also crazy!!! The mud at the bars was unacceptable… I had to virtually throw those shoes away!!! Oh wait… it’s only money!!!
NO PASSOUTS… what’s that about? We went to get jackets from the car at about 20:30 and were not allowed out! I watched people leave because they were cold and were not allowed to go out and get a jacket!
The EVENT ORGANISERS need to catch a big WAKE UP…

devestating! so went to get more only to find out that the student tickets were sold out! so i spent R730 on my coke fest tickets, just on myself. My “group” in total blew R2800 on tickets
but i must say it was sooo worth every cent! Originally wasnt a muse fan but after their performance- how could one not be!
Bar was well organised, but food was dismall- queued for bout an hour. toilets were clean too.
More autograph signing would have been cool. And It was a bit dissapointing that when Korn finished the whole thing was just overs!
Def worth making the LOOOONG trip from PE to see it all! would not have missed it for the world!

COKE FEST ROCKS!!!!! I’ve been to the 2006 & 2008 MCF & to be honest..we had such an awsome time, all those little flaws we’re simply another thing to laugh at. Yes we stood in the muddy bar for about 45minutes at a time. We just gave up the cold beer idea & got 3 of those 500ml’s. What’s the point of getting pissed out of your skull anyway?? If you didn’t go there ’cause you can feel music running in your blood & soul, then don’t come next year! But if all the pantsies don’t come next year, were gonna have alot less plastic glasses on the floor & then also loose the killer laughing we had to see everyone bail all around the place. I think i grew a second knee from having to block my fall with them & still not spill the beers..ha!!
Don’t have a voice, simply ‘cos i screamed till my lungs bled!! Not ‘cos of all the smoke or urine smell, come on guys..stop complaining.we live in a not so promising country when it comes to music. So the next time 5 international bands come along..get yourself some dam gumboots, warm clothes & even a gasmask if you like!! Cos i’m gonna be right in the front of the crowd, smoking it up & screaming till it hurts!!!
THANKS FOR THIS UNFORGETABLE OPPORTUNITY!!!!!!
SEE YOU MAD FREAKS NEXT YEAR AT MY COKE FEST 2009!!!
PS: Let’s get some My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, As I lay dying etc for next year..best we scare the hell out of all the beaaaches who complain, so we can do our little thing we call ROCKING OUT!! WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!

To Gareth… about you moaning about NO PASS OUTS… can you not read… all over the computicket site… the official site in the “rules” they say NO PASS OUTS… its stated… if you dont plan properly BEFORE you go… dont blame the organisers…

I completely agree with shaun
if you don’t plan (that includes the whole eating, drinking, mud-thing) ahead…then it’s ur own stupidness!!! don’t sh*t on others’ heads just coz u don’t want to admit that u were the dumbass that didn’t plan enough.
we crave the music and burst our of excitement when we hear that International Bands come to South Africa and Big Concerts and 5FM actually succeed to bring the cream of the crop to our humble little country and then there are actually people trashing the event…go to a freakin’ bar and have a glass of whatever and chill…if you can’t handle a rockfestival…it’s as easy as this……DON’T GO!!!

OMG My Coke Fest 2008 was frickin AWESOME!!!!
Facilities were easily accesable and there was tons to keep you busy!
And the Bands….
My GOSH!!
The highlight was Muse and Korn for me, but i have to give snaps to Good Charlotte, i’m not really a fan but MAN can those guys keep the crowd going, i myself was swept into all of this and was going “Lifestyles of the rich and the famous, they’re always complaining, always complaining! If moneeeeeeyy is such a problem, you got so many problems think i can solve them…WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” by the end of it.
How classic was Korn singing a snippet from We Will Rock You !!!
Nice one!!!
I can die happily now…now that i have seen Muse Live…*sigh*
And WOW, i guess i made a good decision by going to the Cape Town show rather than the Jo’Burg one…didn’t wait long for beer, loos were decent, i left twice, once went home to change and then again to the garage for smokes…pass-outs weren’t a problem.
Melissa | Mar 26, 2008 | Reply
To Shaun… fair enough there were signs. A sign does not negate anything… in fact it holds not weight in court! There was nothing on the ticket and for you or anyone else to assume that I saw the sign is the first problem… There where many people that wanted pass outs for various reasons and it could have and should have been accommodated for by the organisers. If they don’t know there’s a problem, it will never be fixed!
I am a paying customter that DEMANDS service…

Its sad to see how 5fm still try to associate themselves with progressive rock or anything alternative. 10 yrs ago, perhaps, but c’mon..who are they trying to convince?
Facilities were what one can expect at a rock concert, i think. Still could’nt get the bars right, though. Catering for 40 000+ ppl can never be easy, but employing ppl who’ve actually done bartending before might be a good start. Sound was a bit tatty, but it could’ve been smth to do with the wind swinging the side speakers around.
I thoroughly impressed with Muse. They knew exactly what they were there for..to give people their music as best they can. Not make their goal getting ppl to clap along and say moronic meanigless lines (man, keizer chiefs sucked). If people respond to your music, great for you..if not, finish you act and get off the stage.
Having a laugh at the 5fm monkeys and the stunning performance of Muse made everything else bearable..even the R300 parking fine i’m sure most ppl got. I’m glad i went.

I thought the event was really well handled and the music was great. Been to bigger and smaller concerts in the UK and had to queue for the toilets and the bar.
Sure – put more bogs and bars in, but don’t expect that the prices won’t go up too.
Kaiser Chiefs won the audience over, save for a few miserable Korn fans. But Muse were the act of the night. By a country mile.

I live in the UK and I thought it was a great festival. Truly outstanding sound (with a couple of power outages exceptions, well it is SA), better than UK outdoor festivals. The bar was a nightmare, come over to a UK festival & see how they use machines that can pour 36 pints at a time. Toilets were also a nightmare, but UK festivals are no different. Muse, 30STM & Chris Cornell were awesome. Prices were great but hey its 15R to the GBP! bring it on…

moan moan moan!!! Jaaasiss! I guess some people have never seen the inside of a port o loo at Vortex before, cos then you would realise just how not that bad at all the loos were. Ja, and everyone knows to expect the worst the later it gets. As soon as Good Charlotte finished we got our beers (which took 10 minutes tops) and headed for a good spot to see the bands we really came for, Chris Cornell, Muse and mostly Korn. I had to pee BAD! But i did not pay R600 to wonder aimlessly around the grounds getting pissed, eating and going to the toilet. I was there to see Korn and by god thats what i did! We were in the very front row of golden circle!!! Thats from putting up with not going off to wee, getting drinks or any other things i could do any other bloody day of my life. All in all, was kinda dissapointed cos i like a good girl didnt take my damn camera and wished i could have taken some pics, but that experience will be burned into my memory forever! It was really worth every bruise, ruined jeans and really sore muscles. Had to work the next day without a voice. I WOULD WADE THROUGH A SWIMMING POOL OF HORSE KAK FOR KORN!!! IT RULED!!!!!!! thanks.

Hey again!
Guess just some extra stuff. The thing with MCF08, was that the whole service quality of the event has dropped so much! That’s the issue here – I’ve been to all of the Coke events and this year, the standard of service dropped a LOT. 2007 was amazing – the organisers learnt from problems that happened in 2006 and they solved them. This year, it was more like they were out to make as much money as possible and as an excuse, they gave us bands that have such a following that they thought the fans wouldn’t care what conditions they had, they’d be happy just watching the bands. And by reading the comments, there are a lot of people like that out there!
SA has relatively good rock events. Not enormous but big events nonetheless – As I mentioned in my first post, Oppikoppi and Splashy Fen are perfect examples. There is the mud and rain and dirt and dust yet the total experience is still pleasant because there are toilets available, food and booze readily available and the like. Don’t know how many of the people that are saying that we are moaners have actually been to these or any other festivals and seen how high the quality in these festivals are compared to what we put up with this year. Also, I have been to the gig when Tiesto was in SA – that had 20 000 people at a smaller venue and yet it was handled real well.
So basically its this – Cokefest MUSICALLY was amazing. 10/10 but having only good music doesn’t mean the organisers can rip us off so badly when it comes to service.

MCF 2008 CT was kick ass!!! The food and cool drinks were a tad pricey… R20 and boerie roll! Next time ill go with a deeper pocket. All the bands were great but KoRn kicked ass the most they didnt need any fancy visualizations on the screens. They were worth the 13 hour wait and 800km drive from PE. For MCF 2009 i would love to see more heavier bands such as Lamb of God, Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, Mushroomhead etc.
Heavier means more power and the crowd gets more lively!
If any alternative bands are chosen, HURT would be an awesome choice!!!
Thanks 5FM for this experience that ill never forget! I hope that every year it just gets better and better!

The concert was disgraceful. Firstly the volume was far too high, I thought my ear drums were going to burst from the noise. Secondly there was no seating whatsoever, for an R400 ticket I fully expect at the very least a seat and some proper service. Instead I was forced to stand around in the filth, my shoes are black with the grime. The WC’s were altogether vile, just like the food.
Then there were the rabble I was surrounded by (many of whom appeared to be drunk). They kept jumping around and making a racket, making foul gestures in the air and generally acting like a bunch of hooligans (I strongly suspect some of them were injesting marijuana, I have notified the police accordingly and expect the organizers to rectify this posthaste). One inebriated young man spilled his beverage onto my blouse, which is unacceptable (this was after being shoved around by the completely wild rabble).
The bad language was also totally unacceptable, and the young screamer in white (I think his name was Mars) was completely foul-mouthed. The same goes for the tattooed man in black who played later, although the gentleman who performed the tune from that Bond film was pleasant enough. The dancing guitarist (who I admit played the only decent music of the evening on his white piano) was positively demonic.
Shame on you Coca-Cola, I’d have thought you’d wish to avoid being associated with this sort of disgrace.

Ok so Im from the UK and went to both the Jo’burg and Cape Town gigs and I thought they were amazing. Having been to quite a few festivals in the UK I actually thought this was well organised.
There was barely any queuing to get in, and for that amount of people was good
We found that it took ages to get drinks in Jo’burg but quick to get food, but in Cape Town, quick to get drinks but AGES to get food, went as soon as Good Charlotte had finished and only got our food halfway through Chris Cornell.
I thought the line up was amazing, loved the international bands and actually quite liked some of the local bands, especially Lonehill Estate in Johannesburg.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it, mud included, but then guess we are used to here getting covered head to toe at most festivals in mud and stuff.
But yes, I had a great time, really did enjoy it
Only 1 thing…next year is there anyway of making it possible for people outside SA to buy tickets in advance? We hit the problem that none of us had SA credit cards, thankfully we knew one of the bands so they sorted it for us, but I would love to come again especially if they line up is so awesome again, and would love to be able to buy tickets in advance. That was my ONLY real gripe
Sam | Apr 2, 2008 | Reply
Coke fest 2008 was a bit of a stuff up for me… after R1200 on Golden Circle tickets, plus money for plane tickets, etc the trip probably cost about R7000. I woke up on the morning of the 24th… and proceeded to throw up… continuously. After initially putting it down to a hangover, I went out to the concert with my boyfriend, brother and his girlfriend to enjoy myself. Only to find that I didn’t get any better. After regurgitating blueberry Powerade all over my boyfriend’s shoes (and my bangs) I ended up in the medic tent… went out to see 30 seconds to Mars… threw up again… back to the medic tent…
I eventually decided to leave just before Good Charlotte came on… didn’t really want to, but there was definitely something wrong. The only thing that I can smile about it getting to see 30 seconds to Mars, getting their autographs… and knowing that my boyfriend got to see one of his all-time favourite bands, Korn.
So I’ve resolved to put the “What if’s” behind me and hope that next year’s line up sees some great bands!
My wishlist would include:
Greenday
My Chemical Romance
System of a Down
The killers
Foo Fighters
here’s holding thumbs!

wat is your ppls problem, wat do u suggest they do about the queues. theres only so much space for ppl behind a bar and food stalls. as for the toilets, would u rather they had more toilets, if they had a few more it would hardly cut your waiting time down, unless there were loads of them, and do u really want to see toilets everywhere u go. when u complain about these things, think logically before u do.
I think the organisers did a great job. the only complaint that i have was the r50 parking, i mean i payed r600 for my ticket, got to the designated parking lot rolled down my window and the guy says to me “50 bucks” that is a bit much, i think when paying those prices u should at least be able to park for free or at least a decent price.

MCF (2008JHB) was amazing.
I would’ve seriously paid R300 just to see 30 Seconds to Mars – a slight power failure (shit happens) . . would love to see them again (for the orginizers I think that My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds will go great together on a line-up) . . 30 Seconds to Mars would’ve been even better if they started a bit later.
Sounds like the golden circle had a ‘bronze’ spot . . so glad I rolled with normal trailer section=)
Bought my ticket the day before, and have no regrets.
A helpfull tip for 2009 crowd: I see peple complaining about the food – when you get really hungry at a concert, just drink more beer.

I have to say that this is the most pathetic rule I have ever heard of!
Look at any international concert around the world – people are taking pics/videos/photos from everywhere.
Every cell phone has a camera so – are they going to confiscate everybody’s phone?
sorry – I just wish the people of SA would unite against this kind of rubbish – but because we never get to see these international bands I know we will put with the organizers pathetic regulations. After all what the heck is the problem with having pictures of ourselves at such a jol. Surely these pics would be better advertising for them as they get pasted on FaceBook etc.
As for me – I am not going to support them. I have been anti-establishment all my life and I am into my 50’s already.
I will save up and go see the BMV overseas. Its a pity but thats just the way I am.
Make reasonable rules I will be there like a shot. AG Splashfest – here I come whooohaaaa more days, more fun.
